no. custom firmware must be installed from 1.50 or from using the universal unbricker; it puts the psp directly to 3.71 m33-2. you CANNOT upgrade to a custom firmware from official firmware higher than 1.50.
also, you CANNOT upgrade straight to 3.71 m33-2, unless you use the universal unbricker. if you start from 1.50, you will have to upgrade to 3.52 m33, then to 3.52 m33-4. the 3.71 m33 installer will fail to install if you do not have 3.52 m33-3 or m33-4.

any firmware 3.51 and higher WILL NEED pandora's battery. no exploits have been found, and it seems pandora is going to be the only way to downgrade for a while.

the only alternative method without the cfw psp is the hardmod. only recommended for professionals, as it requires soldering.

go HERE for instructions.
you accept full responsibility for what happens. you cannot blame anyone but yourself if your battery doesn't work.

don't use it if it sparked. there's a possibility that the battery can short out the whole psp motherboard. use a new battery.

3.72 hx-1 is custom firmware. you STILL NEED to downgrade to 1.50. doesn't matter if the custom firmware is higher than the official one you have, it must be downgraded to be installed.
you can keep on trying the hardmod method, or you can send in a battery and memory stick to someone, and have them make pandora's battery and magic memory stick.

Oh, you shoulda set the memstick up BEFORE you did the battery. If you don't have a 2nd battery, you're in trouble. Also, there isn't just one universal custom fw b/c Dark_AleX keeps finding better options and solutions to previous problems. Don't worry about HX. Custom FW POC, SE, OE, and M33 are all by Dark_AleX and ALL his works are completely trustworthy.
