Just wondering if you need to my the hdmi surround sound or does the "normal" surround sound still work perfectly the same when connected to the ps3

If you are referring to optical out then yes it works fine.

Im not sure 100% but I think Optical Outputs True 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound while HDMI is 7.1 Dolby HD Master Sound.

just know that HDMI is always the best, for video and audio. Also, it depends on what your home theater has. If it doesn't have an HDMI input (like mine), just use an optical audio cable (which blows away the regular 5.1 analogue by the way).
