If you rip the DVD, why is it not possible to burn the copy just by dragging the files to a blank DVD in OSX?

Re: The error and media discussion.

My iMac only writes DVDs at 4X max. I've seen 8x rated media fail with an error and often it only writes 8x media at 2x while 4x rated media writes fine at 4x. I'm talking Memorex, Verbatum, FujiFiulm, etc. I haven't really tried any 'off' brands yet.

I did complain to Apple and they're coming here to replace my optical drive late this week to see if that solves the 8x media only writing at 2x.

The media aspect can be weird - a combination of brand and 'rated' write capability.

I have one of the LaCie external burners on order (the new one not shipping yet with lightscribe). Goodness knows how that will work out. I'm expecting a lot, but I'm not sure the dual layer will be of much use considering the cost of the media.

I am clueless as to how to rip dvds and burn them, I have never done it before. Yesterday I downloaded Mac the Ripper and am wondering how that works and can I burn a DVD using imovie on my mac once I learn to rip a dvd movie and how to keep it region one or region free. Thanks a bunch!

Help!!

CJB65: That will not work because it will burn as a data disc and not a DVD video disc.

TAMEZBT: read the guide which is the first post on this thread.

I don't know how to conver PAL to NTSC or vice versa.

The easiest way to convert from PAL to NTSC or vice-versa is to use DVD Converter which comes bundled with MPEG2Works 3.x.x.

MediaGuru did a great job in writing out this start guide on ripping. But in the steps somewhere I wish someone could tell me what I need and how to edit a movie.

Surely someone out there has done this and can assist me. I need just a little guidance.

Thanks and God bless.

Heya Mediaguru,

First off, beautiful job on the tutorial I have had no issues (or created any coasters) due to your great instruction.

I do have a questions for you or any others, who might know how to convert Bittorrent files to a standard DVD format, or even converting them to a .AVI or .Mov file.

Thanks in advance,

Hey - I'm not only new to ripping, but new to mac as well, so thanks in advance for you patience!

I'm a high school teacher and I use a lot of video clips in class. traditionally, I use a projector and DVD player to play DVD's I own and just skip around to the parts I need. Well, with a mac (and your advice) I'm hoping to rip or edit the sections I need out of the DVD as a whole and play them inside of a powerpoint or keynote presentation. I downloaded MTR and OSEX, but I'm having trouble getting the ripped files into iMovie so I can clip them into the chunks I need for class. Also, will I need to compress the files to get them to work better in a presentation format?

Thanks again for your patience and help!

Any standard video editing program like imovie uses dv or quicktime streams. You'll have to convert or rip to one of the formats your video editor uses.

Check out dvdxdv or cinematize for that.

Thanks Guru - that's working great and I'm getting the hang of iMovie...never could have done anything like this on my old PC!

Now I'm wondering if there is anyway to store the iMovie files on a CD to save space on my hardrive. I have an iBook with a combo drive - in other words I DON'T have a DVD burner...any suggestions? DVD2OneX is only a DVD compressor right?

Since movie files are so freaking huge a CD would not be the best plan unless it is under 700MB. You could archive to DVD somehow or just do a real time dump of your video to a DV tape in your camera.

You can also relink your media clips so your project file is not that big but if you want to work with it again you'd have to transfer all the clips from your DV machine again. (if your original stuff is from DV).

Have you heard of a program called DivX? I have a PC using friend who swears by it for compressing DVD media to a CD. I downloaded the mac version and will try it soon - just wondering if you had any experience with it. It claims to compress all sorts of video files, including quicktime, iMovie, and FCP so that they will fit to a conventionaly CD and then play in a regular DVD player that supports the technology. My friend can get a 2 hour movie on 3 CD's

A two hour movie on 3 CD's? Sounds like a pain in the ass to me. I'd rather put a 2 hour movie on 1 dvd.

If you reduce the amount of data, something has to give. There will be loss somewhere!

I have a windows program DVDXTREME and DVDXCopy that burns and one of them compresses dvds. It is reliable however it takes forever..it was originally put out by 321 Studios before the US gov't closed it down.

those instructions are great! (mediagura thanks!)
Can anyone help? I am using a MAC G3 - ADVC-50 which is accepting the feed into either Roxio Toast, or into IMOVIE - but I cannot work out how to burn my vhs to disk (too large in size). I know with regular burning I use DVDtooneX to compress...but these all work with "VIDEO_TS" folders and .VOB & .Ifo & .Bup files. Does anyone know I must do next? I can use imovie to create a file on the hard drive - and thats as far as I have got. I have figured that both Toast and imovie can create chapters etc. but how do I get it to the point where I can send it to dvdtooneX to compress it?? please help.

You can create a disc image of your dvd on your hard drive and then use DVD2OneX to compress it.

Thanks guru! but one question - dont laugh.... how do I create a disk image? when I save from imovie - it saves in a media file format which dvdtooneX cant accept.
I have found the file / quicktime / spare section to save as a complete uncompressed file, but still need help.
cheers

You would need to use toast, idvd or dvd studio pro to take your mpeg2 files and create a working VIDEO_TS folder. READ UP MATE!

two items...
Ok...done alot of reading, and experimenting - with no luck unfortunately. imovie only gives two options to save. 1/ for idvd (which I dont have)so it quits- or 2/other options including full DV file (for quicktime), I have tried all the other options to save - to no avail. Full DV puts a 'media' file on desktop. In 'Toast 6 Titanium' I have managed to create a disk image file - which shows as a ".TOAST" type file. When I try to import any of these into DVD2OneX - none accept. Help!!!! (Is there any step by step instructions for this - or do I need to get a 'authoring' program (is there any free downloads?) that will take those files, and allow to compress??

The other issue has just starting to happen. I use either 'Mactheripper' / dvdbackup / osex to burn - DVD2One to compress / Toast 6 to burn. I have done about 50 disks with no issues, but, In the last 3 titles I have tried - the 'verification' has failed, and the disc does not play correctly on my settop. I checked my proceedure against MG's - and it is identical - I have 3 different brands of media, and all have proved themselves in the succesfull 50 - but all have failled here. What do you suggest? Could it possibley be the 2 month year old Pioneer 109 burner? or should I delete - reinstall some software?

Your first question: DVD2OneX only works with VIDEO_TS. To make a dvd from imovie you need to convert to MPEG2 and then "author" with idvd, dvdstudio pro or perhaps sizzle.

2nd question:What titles are you having problems with? Some newer titles have the Arccos protection and require some tweaking. You can try different media or burn speeds. What media are you using now?

Ta for the responce - I was trying x-files season two, and buffy season 3. The media varies - two are cheapies which have been good (one is dvd-R the other dvd+R, and one is TDK (dvd+R) which is great. The faults happen on all... Was any of those authoring programs a download? Also what setting in imovie creates the Mpeg2's?
cheers

I'd get some decent media like Ritek or Taiyo Yuden. Also use -R instead of +R.

I usually use MTR and popcorn and had pretty good success. I have a GMac5 and using Panther. However I tried to make a copy of a BBC dvd..Party at the Palace. However while I have a full DVD the DVD will only play 24 minutes. I have made several coasters. I am relatively new to make but when I use a Windows Media Player I notice that the 8 chapters appear to be the same. The video files play ok on the computer but after I burn it, I get the same results..I do notice that there is two IFO files and BUP files. Is this the problem?
