Here's another genuine YUDEN000T02 burned at 4X -- I've just burned "The Island" a while ago. All I can say is "awesome... super awesome..!!"

That is very impressive indeed, alkohol, esp PI.

I've been getting around 97 rating as I mentioned earlier with Maxell (Ritek G05)....

Decided to give Verbatim 16x DVD+R adv AZO+ (photo printable) a try.

After backing up 3 Ps2 games (still to check), I backed up a dvd, burned at x4.....got a quality score of 60, PI failures high.

Ouch... Played ok mind you, still hope its a one off.

I realize that this is flogging a dead horse, but I have to show this scan. this is a TYG02 (8X) burned at 16X on a BenQ 1620. I also scanned it with the BenQ and got a score of 99. You can't get a score of 99 with a Lite-On because a peak PIF of 1 gives a 98 and fractional PIF is not shown. I don't really care what speed people burn at. Faster sometimes is OK. I used to have a Pioneer 107D that I had hacked firmware in so it would burn anything at any speed up to 8X. I found, with it anyway, I always got a better scan with a disc burned at 6X than I did at 4X. This was even with a 4X disc. I can't explain it, but it happened. I burn primarily with my BenQ now and it never offers a 6X burn. My Pioneer and Lite-On both do, though.

A friend picked up some JVC +R at Big Lots for $11.99 for a spindle of 30. I asked him if I could have one to try out, just for sh**ts and giggles. Here are the horrid results...

I hadn't read anything that I can recall about the JVC's, so I thought I would offer that scan up...just a little knowledge at someone elses expense. LOL

I like the no keyboard in your sig. What I usually get with a fresh install of Windows XP is a message that it can't find a driver for my network adapter and do I want to go on the internet to look for one. That makes about as much sense as pressing keys on a non existing keyboard.

I am a relative newby. I ran Nero CD-DVD Speed and all worked except Disc Quality. I have tried burned and blank disc and it will not run.
What am I doing wrong and how do I make it work. There seems to be no printed directions for this part of Nero.

Many thanks for your kind endulgence.

Not all burners support PIE/PIF scans. I have a Pioneer and an LG that don't. Lite-On and BenQ do. Those are all that I've had experience with.

Yeah thanks for the great thread. Since I came across it, I've been testing all my media and it further supports your scans. I knew CMC Mag was bad, but quality scores of 13 or 10, yuck. Taiyo Yuden is the shiite. Even DVD's I burned with 10 programs running got quality scores in the 80's. Of course from now on I will shut everything down when burning. The TY's I burned with nothing running all come out to 95's. Nothing else will ever grace the inside of my modded PS2. Burn in hell CMC Mag. Alkohol, I'd like permission to use this thread in my PS2 FAQ: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/252193 Thank you.

I have read the book of Nero 7 and there a part on CD-DVD Speed but no instructions. I have 2 Plextors, 1 Pioneer and 1 MadDog DVD burners and all run all the tests except the Disk Quality, on that function, the start button is greyed out and will not start. Is there anything I can do? I'm sorry to be so inept in this matter.

Maybe someone who has one of those drives can help you out, if I remember right, plextor has its own version of the CD/DVD drive speed test. But anyways, if they play well in your standalone player and you are happy with the results then it's okay.. I rarely scan disks anyways, mainly for Sh*ts and giggles anyways.

@Cornet32

If you have Plextor drives and they came with PlexTools you can do your tests. Just use the Qcheck it will test your disks. My drive will not work with Nero Test but will work with PlexTools.

The firmware is current. I never get good scan results using the Nero tool - yet I never get coasters and my discs play in everything and longevity is never an issue. I really don't know what the significance of a bad scan test is other than it is a disc that produces bad scan test results ;)

Hmmmm... I can't really comment in query to the new YUDEN000T03, since I haven't used it, plus I don't think it's available in the US yet. How fast did you burned by the way? Maybe it is a bad batch and or it's dirty (or defected) somewhere in the middle of the disc you'r burning. If it's 16X and you're using NEC burner's then perhaps you may want to try to bump it up a little to 8X and see if you'll get any better results.

I personally don't like to burn any of my precious backups beyond 4X, but I've done roughly 15% of my backups with 8X in the past and so far they get nearly the same "Quality Score" and "PIF" just like all of my 4X burned (some does slightly has a few PIF more, like 3 though).

My question I think is a little differnt, I have been bburning my store bought movies for a back-up for several years now, I never heard of ty disc's before but over the last several months since joining afterdawn I have learned they are suppose to be the best, I have a 3 year old compaq presario with a philips dvd writer 6200 model, I have bewen using memorex, maxell, hp's, and fuji's, sure every once in a great while I would get a coaster, maybe one per 50, but anyway, since reading about these ty's I saw a sale from supermedia.com store and orderd 200 ty DVD+R, got them like a week later and was excited, firtst I noticed that there is no labiling on any disc, they have little numbers you can hardly see but really dont mean nothing anyway to me, ecah package 50 per did have a little white label on top of the pakage, its all forign anyway, and even bieng a forign print nothing resembles anything saying ty, I hear this supermedia.com is suppose to be reputable, hope so, anyway, I tried to copy my first movie last night and guess what, error, tried another one from another package, error also, I pulled out mt hp disc's and it worked fine, and the only thing that was english on that package that I could understand was a caution label, saying might not work if your firmware is not up to date or whatever that means, well my other disc's like hp, maxell, memorex and fuji say the same thing, but niether give me trouble, did I get ripped here, why my burner works with all disc's except this ty thing I have no clue, and I'm still a novice with computers when it comes to things like maybe having to go to the site everybody gives to update firmware, ity says to go to dvdrwservices.com but it has tought me nothing, I hope I didnt thow my $80 out the window, does anything sound familiar here, like are these ty disc not labeled etc. please help, thanks Fred

Well I ordered these: http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-silver-thermal-8x-dvd-... and haven't had any problems. Maybe since your burner is older, it's just not very compatible with TY's. I use them for backing up PS2 games and they are perfect as I'm now well into my second cake box. I used them with an older Sony external burner and a brand new Sony DRU-810A internal burner without any issues. Maybe some of the more knowledgeable members in this section can help you out, most of my knowledge is in the PS2 arena.
