screw it...the average ebay memory stick is about $100 but @ buy.com you could get a REAL one for only $60 more. i'd rather spend tht much money than get a fake one to just have it blow up in a week or two

not litrally, that $60 more gives you a warranty, reliable, and genuine memory stick. Thats just my opinion. $100 is alot to spend on somehting that won't lost more that a month(or sometimes a week or 5 months)

Yeah I agree with FrgttnHro. I'd much rather spend $50 more to get a lifetime warranty. I like my stuff to last as long as I need them to. And it's not a best buy warranty, it's a lifetime warranty from sandisk.

i like warranties. if they didn't exist, my xbox would be junk, and i would be without a working one, unless of coarse I paid for a new one. they don't cover the item though, if it's your own fault. my brother dropped his psp and the screen cracked. they said they wouldn't fix it under warranty, but they would repair it for around $90 or more, if i remember correctly. i said screw that. you can buy new lcd's on ebay for around $30 and put them in yourself. that's what we did in that case. so if its a manufacturer flaw, its covered. otherwise, you are SOL.

the warrianty isnt the only bright side to buying it from retail. you have the relief of knowing that your card will never fail you, and if it did you could always return it. I've heard reports of ebay fake memory sticks actually becoming stuck inside the psp as well as the common reliablity factor. If you combine all those factors than that $50 dollars is nothing. Just my opinion. You get what you paid for.

I bought an iPod i had to send it to apple, futureshop paid but i had to do all the work. They never say anything at purchase. So the three year warranty is useless for futureshop becasue all the do is pay shipping and handling. All i get is 2 years from them wtf!

that is apple... don't do business with companies you do not trust. i have had success with warranties. xbox being number 1. the system, overheated constantly, and after that, they sent me a brand new one. kenwood also helped me out with a brand new cd deck for my car, where the original one i bought, stopped reading discs. just cause you have had bad times with warranties, doesn't mean they are bad. I have had good and bad. I guess it depends on the company. Good luck to all of you. Although, I do not trust extended warranties, since, they don't even start, until after the manufacturers warranty has ended. BE SMART! That is all.

4 days ago i won a 4gb (FAKE) memory stick from this seller. Everything about the listing was just screaming FAKE because the card in the stock photo didn't even say sony. I shouldn't have bidded but at the time all i wanted was a 4gb for cheap, than when i was thinkin about the long effects of most of the fakes out there. I tryed to cancel my order but the guy wants $25 while he listing did not look like it was more than $3. Although i have no hard evidence its fake i dont want to pay that much money. Is there anything i can do, like a threaten to tell sony or get out of paying for that much money? What would you do?

You're in the exact same situation as me - and I don't think there's anything you can do. Since it looked like a sony memory stick, but did'nt have the sony logo on it, and didn't mention sony in any way, he is NOT claiming that it is a genuine stick. Therefore you can't say it's fake. Just hope it works or try to sell it... :(

Clue #2 Back view
The font face, font size and printing technique are the main criteria to differentiate the genuine from the fake, so you must take notice.
Genuine has wider 'MADE IN JAPAN' than 'ICES/NMB-003.'while fake usually is the other way around, and some are missing a critical dot '.' at the end of the '-003' word.
Genuine has the letter 'S' in 'MSX-2GS' as Italic than the 'S' used in 'COMPLIES CANADA' and 'ICES/NMB-003' wordings. Fake is using identical normal font face throughout! Also note that genuine has a shorter stroke of the '/' character whereas fake has longer stroke and it is taller than any other characters.
On the 10 gold metal stripes/contact, genuine is covered fully by the black plastic housing from the top to the bottom end. Fakes may have small black holes on the some metal stripes, some have its gold metal stripe not fully covered by the black plastic housing. Some fakes have internal green color PCB board exposed as pictured displaying its inferior manufacturing defect.
Genuine uses print ready/control vector art technique and has all letterings engraved by laser-etched into the plastic shell of the card. Fake uses inferior hi-res bitmap to copy the genuine, so zoom in a bit to see the printing flaw. The font on the fake usually is messy, out of focus and rub off easily. To know if it is printed, just use your finger to feel the surface as the letterings are a bit raised.
Clue #5 Capacity and Transfer Speed
Genuine 2GB has a capacity of 1909MB while some devices will read them at 1910MB. Some older fake 2GB shows 1948MB and 1959MB of memory space when being tested. Newer fake 2GB may now show any of these figures including the 1910MB of a genuine. However some 2GB fakes only have a true capacity of only 512MB/1GB. Try transferring as much data as possible to your card and see if it will hold close to 2GB as most fake 2GB won't hold anything near 2GB.
Genuine hi-speed card (with red-stripe) has a transfer speed at about 80Mbps. Fake has a slower transfer speed with 1948MB fake actually can do about 65Mbps to 70Mbps and 1959MB fake atmost 60Mbps
Mine has (.) at the end of the -003 word.
Wider "Made In Japan"
Can save up to 1993.
I'm not sure with the packaging.
So far the Memory stick doesn't has any problem.
Does anyone know how to detect counterfeit sony memory stick pro duo?

well unfortunately its a little difficult to read all the letters and such on ebay. I dont really want to take the chance i guess. the 4gb on sony are going for 100 bux but are they fake? i think ill just get a sandisk from a reputable company and not have to worry about it

i thought the same too, but they're not. I got a real one from a local store here and returned mine from buy.com. Anyway, I am getting rid of my PSP. Can anyone suggest what I should charge for a psp with a real sandisk 2gb MS? The psp is firmware 2.0. Any suggestions? I also got 1 game (Fight night round 3). Would I be better off selling that separate or all in a complete package? Thanks guys.
-Duga
EDIT: I lied about the firmware. It's actually a 1.5 firmware downgraded from a 2.0. It's been so long since I used it, I couldn't remember what it was. Sorry.
