Just did some "testing" with the Verbatim Made In India DLs. Got them @ Best Buy. All their 2.4x Verbs were MII, no MIS. Their 8x Verbs were all MIS.
There is a difference in the disc. Here's a scan of a MII and a MIS, the MII is the top disc:
Disc Top
The MII has an additional inner silver-pink(as the rest of the disc) ring on the inside of the shiny silver (shows as black in the scan).
And as someone else noted before, the hub code is longer and takes up 2/3 of the hub.
The underside shows manufacturing imperfections I've not noted on the MIS discs. Here's a scan of the bottoms, MII on top, but I don't think you'll see anything.
Burn-wise, I got a decent burn @ 2.4x on my Benq DW1655. Here's the scan.
I did not get a good burn @ 4x with my Samsung S203B. Here's that scan.
The label states 2.4x up to 6x (depending on burner). I queried the disc via ImgBurn in all my drives, Samsung S203B, Lite-On LH-20A1P, Lite-On LH-20A1H, Sony DRU-800A(cross-flashed to a Lite-On 1693) and Benq DW1655. The Benq will only burn this disc @ 2.4x, the rest will burn it up to 4x, but I think I'll only burn this media @ 2.4x.
Right now I'd rate this MII media below the Ritek S04 and RICOHJPN D01 DLs and slightly above the Ritek D01 media.

I was in Best Buy this afternoon picking up a supply of blank dvds and browsed thru the Sony section where I saw a large stock of DVD-Rs that were marked "Made in Malaysia". Has anyone else seen these or used them? And if so, what quality might they be?
(I usually use Verbs but in a pinch I figured I could use Sonys, but not if they're now outsourcing to some crap plant.)
Thanks for any thoughts.

Cassi1125,
I found a couple of threads to read and you can make your own conclusions. I would try them if it were me for less than $30 per 100. You can get TYG03's or TYG02's for about $25-$30 delivered from supermedia.com. It all depends on what media you want to use and for what. :)
sony16d1 MIM thread
great quality MIT Sony?

Thanks, greensman, for the links. :) Think I will steer clear of the MIMs for the time being.

I have Nero DVD Speed 4.7.7.5 will this suffice? I hope to report my findings here much as possible (or there's interest).
I'm disappointed with the Litey 20A1S's burn performance. I ran some ripping and burning benchmarks (burn using Verb -R 16x @ 8x). The Samy did well but the Litey was bad, bad, bad.
I guess the bottom line is I have a choice to keep one of the 3 drives listed in my quote above and I'm sticking w/ the Samy 203B. I did find the registry hack to support DVD Speed BTW.
I'll post the screenshots once I get home.

What f/w are you using and the speed and so on. Is it ripping pretty well for you tho?? I heard they were good readers/scanners and decent burners. ;)

9L08 firmware burning at 8x speed with TYGO3s mostly, yeah its ripping fine but the quality scores aren't good but the playback is fine which is what counts
the PX-810SA Plextor/Pioneer drives are doing great so IMO i think the Pioneer drives are the best on the market.
do the Samsung drives work using nero quality scans?

They do if you go in and do a minor registry edit. Easy to find in Google.

I know he's not here anymore but I'm gonna link everyone to the f/w for the LH-20A1S link This the f/w provided by cK at CDF's. Nice f/w and I've had good luck with it. ;)
Yes the Samsung will do Nero scans but as Playr indicated you have to make some tweaks to your Registry. :) link

Just wanted to post some scans of the LH-20A1S. For herrick and aabbccdd. ;) I have more but these are just typical scans with this media. With the exception of the "big" spike on the MCC 003 the scans look good and like I said this is typical. :)
herrick I think you'll like the "new" drive and you're right I do like Lite-On drives. ESPECIALLY with CodeKing's "after market" firmware. :D

yeah mines the same drive minus the LS as i said playback is fine but my quality burn scans are spiking at the lead in causing a poor quailty score. it seems like it happening about 99% of the time i will post a scan soon

20A1L.BL04 f/w from CodeKing. ;)
That link should give you the d/l for the "newest" f/w for the LH-20A1L, if not then scroll down until you reach your preferred d/l. ;)

herrick,
d/l = download
Scroll down to the "proper" f/w for your drive and then d/l. ;) It has the fb eos f/w from C0deKing. fb = fast burn; eos = enhanced overspeed..... I think that improves the drives abilities. I would get SmartBurn as well. Good little addition to the Lite-On software for improving burning as well. ;)
add: If she's a GOOD woman she'll be able to handle the competition. :D

herrick I may have been unclear in my suggestion on how to use Nero CD/DVD Speed for capturing your scan/test. ;) Look at what follows and see if that makes more sense. Again sorry for the confusion. :D
