Wiikey web site is out supposedly because of HD failure and loss of some of the site sections, especially the reseller one.
Could you elaborate on which update you performed? From which game?

region = US
SMG = US
firmware = 1.9g
I stuck the SMG in the console, went to the disc channel, began to play the game, screen appeared and said something about Unauthorized Modification, ask if I wanted to continue with update and I choose no. Every since then when I try to play backup games(ISO) I get the unable to read disc with the upside down question mark. None of my games work except originals.

Well you should of clicked on yes, it would have been OK SMG has to install an update on your Wii so it can be played, they just put that there to scare you.
As for none of the backups working now thats strange.
I'd try the 1.9b recovery disk, thats all I can think of, but as for using the recovery disk I'm not 100% sure how to use it, I don't know if you should filchop/fixsize it first, or exactly how to use it once it's in the console, this would be a good section for rafadawn's thread, anyone got the method for making and using the recovery disk, does it need to be GC disk size (fixsize or high compatability)?
Maybe clicking No makes it run through a bad WiiKey flash, hmmm.
My friend uses YASOM he keeps going on about Big N bad flashing WiiKeys it starting to get to me.

Did you update the Wii system on the internet before inserting the SMG disc?
If yes, when exactly did you update your system? Was it recently? Do you remember the exact day?
Thanks!

when I tried to run the recovery disc I used DVD+R instead of DVD-R I dont know if this would be an issue or not but its still not working.
Is there anyway I can go and change my updates? all the way back to the beginning update?
I modded a friends wii and everytime he puts SMG in to play a screen comes up and says:
"Wii has detected Unauthorized Hardware, If you continue with this update your system may become inoperable"

once it had been through the motions of an update it has never asked to do it since nor has it caused any problems with any other games

And that is exactly the way it should work.
I really cannot understand why people that mod their system do not take the time to read about the do's and don'ts before jumping in.
There must be about 20 to 30 threads righ here at AD, not to mention all over the net, that say the same thing:
1) Update Wii to 3.1
2) Update wiikey to 1.9g
3) Run SMG and let it update
4) Have fun
Naturally, prople should read the instructions, understand what is involved, and make the necessary preparations for each of the steps above. Unfortunately we have a lot of people who do not like to read the 'manuals'.

It does not matter if SMG is a backup or an original.
Follow the steps. Update to 1.9g ... no need to go through 1.9b.
Follow the steps!!!

When I decided to buy my dvds I bought all dvd+r. I believe I read a forum somewhere that told me to use +R. All my firmware and backups are +R. For now on do I need to use -R instead?

Not necessarily but the Wii laser seems to prefer DVD-R well at least in my experiences, and the WiiKey team seem to believe so or that the WiiKey works better with DVD-R as they recommend it for use with the 1.9b recovery disk.

Im running this freaking recovery disc 1.9b DVD-R. I am not getting anything from this what so ever. I have reset turned on/off 10-20 times, still no luck.
1. burned 1.9b to dvd-r using nero
2. ejected whatever disc that was currently in my wii(links crossbow)
3. inserted the 1.9b disc.
4. pressed reset
5. allowed it to sit or do whatever for 3-7 minutes.(wii menu screen)
6. powered the wii all the way down to the redlight not the orange.
7. turned the wii back on ejected 1.9b
8. inserted backup(tiger woods 08)
9. still nothing, not reading backups at all.
10. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WHAT NOW??????????????????
does anyone see were i am going wrong with what I did?

Did you pad the recovery disk like you would an update or config disk, and heard that you might try making the recovery disk as a GCOS disk.
Try going on the disk channel not the menu screen, think you open the disk channel before insterting the recovery disk. hope this helps.

If nothing else works, I believe it has to be the chip itself. I will take this and use one of those desoldering vacuums and start from scratch. to bad I have wasted all my DVD-R that I was suppose to use in the 1st place.

picture like this one
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/557098
if u werent looking at this ass, u werent updating your wiikey
if u was then apologies
one more silly question - u have turned on the region over ride in config 1.2?

I have configured the wii before and the only disc that i ran when I 1st configured was 1.9g. I never used 1.3 or 1.2 to config. I went straight to the beta hotfix and I was up and running for about a month. I even played SMG and updated it. Before I have tried using PAL games(resident evil) and I get the "Unable to Read" message. So I assumed I had a US version. my current update is 3.1U. I do need to inform that my son plays the wii more than me so the wii is in standby the majority of the time and it can update when its ready(via wireless). Wii was last played about 7th or 8th of this month and all my back-ups works fine. The console sits on top of my TV, which is about 5ft tall so my son has to use a step stool to change games. I say that because maybe one would assume the wii gets moved around so the wiikey could become lose.
Thin1... No when I inserted the 1.9g or 1.9b I didnt see the ass in the disc channel. when I insert backups or configuration disc all I see is the light gray disc like nothing is in the wii at all.
