Hi everyone
New to the forum, so please excuse if this has been discussed somewhere, I have searched but came up empty.
I have been running DVD Shrink on my XP Pro machine with a Sony DVD-ROM drive and a Sony DVD-RW DRU-710A. I use DVD Decrypter and have Nero installed, so that I can burn using DVD Shrink.
I recently purchased a Lite On LH-20A1P and installed it, works ok with my other software, Roxio, etc. But I tried to use DVD Shrink tonight and the drive is not recognized. I have the jumper set to SL as the Sony DVD Rom is set to MA. I thought it may be a program issue, but after connectiong the old Sony DRU-710A burner, everything worked fine, as normal.
Any help as to why DVD Shrink 3.2 is not recognizing the Lite On LH-20A1P burner? Firmware upgrade? driver upgrade?
Any help would be appreciated. Its been a rough week for me and my machines. My laptop recently developed a habit of spitting out the dreaded BSOD and so I know have to re-install XP on that and now I am having issues with my desktop and this burner.
thanks for reading.

Hi don1973
What version of Nero are you running - like 6.6.0.18, 7.10.1.0?
Did you buy Nero or is this an oem version (came w/ one of the burners)?

Hi
The Nero I have came with my Sony DVD RW DRU-710. I installed it after DVD Shrink said it was needed in order to burn using DVD Shrink.
It has worked fine up until the install of the Lite On burner.
*EDIT* My Lite On burner came with Nero Essentials 7. Do you think its just a matter of the older Nero software not recognizing the Lite On? And would installing the Nero 7 Essentials solve this issue??
thanks for your response, I appreciate the assistance.
Don

It might be a combo of an older version or Nero and it being an oem version. Some oem versions from Nero 6 only work w/ the burner they came with.
To check that see if the LiteOn is listed in Burning Rom or Express.
Try updating Nero to the latest version of 6 - 6.6.1.15 - package 1.
The one that came with the LiteOn will work but Essentials doesn't come w/ Burning Rom which it what Shrink uses for the autoburn. So if you install it you'll need to have Shrink save to the hard drive then use Express to burn the video_ts folder.
If you do install Nero 7 - uninstall Nero 6 1st using the clean tool.
Here's another option use ImgBurn instead to auto burn w/ Shrink. Download this tweak to Shrink - copy it to the DVD Shrink folder then when you click backup pick the ImgBurn option instead. - link
Oh and not a problem on the help :)

I updated to the latest version 6.6.1.15 and it did not solve the problem.
I opened Express and did the process to create a data disc and DVD image and the after selecting the both types files to burn, the next screen showed the Lite on as the recorder drive for both types. So the Express is showing the Lite On.
thanks again for your help. I guess I will look into the other options you suggested.

Hmmm I'm at a loss right now. But ImgBurn is a great burner so there's always that option for autoburning w/ Shrink.
Happy Holidays!

@don1973
Check Burning Rom and see if the LiteOn is listed as a recorder there.

Hi
I checked the burning ROM SE and when I got to choose recorder, the Lite On does show up on the list, but there is a little red x at the far left and the status says its "Not available"
I do have access to Nero 8.1.1.0 Ultra Edition. Should I uninstall the current Nero Express, using the Nero clean tool you provided, and then install this version?
If you have any other suggestions I would appreciate it.
thanks

Ok then that's why the LiteOn isn't listed in Shrink. Shrink uses Burning Rom so if the drive doesn't show there then that's why.
My guess is that since it's an oem version - burning rom is only available to the drive it came with.
Now using 8.1.1.0 will more then likely shwo the drive with Shrink BUT the problem is it's looks like Nero is cutting strings w/ Shrink with Nero 8. It will burn but not play in a dvd player - just a pc. Something to do with the file structure.
So then it would be back to the same 2 choices w/ Nero 6 - do it in 2 steps - save to the hard drive then use Express to burn or use ImgBurn

@bikine7
Thanks for the advice, I was reading about the burning issues with Nero 8. I also read in that thread that someone reverted back to Nero 7 (7.5) and that issue was resolved. Would that be a solution?
@quikdraw
Yes, I tried a couple times re-installing Shrink. I also tried uninstalling the drives and letting XP grab them again, but neither was able to solve my problem.
I appreciate the help and advice :)

Yep getting a full version of Nero 7 would do the trick.
I'm not sure if you can still pick up Nero 7 in the store since Nero 8 is out.
The Nero 7 version you have is missing the key piece - Burning Rom so you would need the full version.

Thanks Binkie7 (sorry about the mis-spelling on your screename earlier)
I have one more question for you, if you don't mind.
When I remove the current Nero express 6 what would be the best way to remove it.
Should I do the add/remove programs in control panel, then run the Nero clean tool?
Or can I just run the Nero clean tool and remove the program and any other traces from my machine that way?
thanks :)

No worries don1973 on the misspelling - I can be the queen of typos :)
I uninstall from add/remove programs then run the clean tool usually.
Doing it that way you'll get a message saying something like no .exe found but just point the clean tool to the ahead folder in programs files and it will still remove some leftovers.
Just an FYI - I installed the latest Nero 8 - 8.2.8.0 today and still the same problem - no very doubtful there will ever be a fix w/ Shrink.

Hi binkie7
I finally quit on my search for Nero 7.5. I had a couple choices but all the versions were "pirated" and I did not want to chance installing a virus, etc you never know who you can trust on those sites.
So I went ahead and installed imgburn and the tweak you posted. It worked great!! Thank you very much :) Burned much faster than Nero.
One question though, the "verify" button. Is it a good idea to have the prog check the burned disc or should I uncheck that?? I don't mind letting it verify, but if you think that it is not necessary I will uncheck it.
Thanks again for your help and have a happy new year :)
cheers
Don

Ho don1973
I almost always have the verify unchecked - I'll use it once in awhile for dual layers burns. It verifies the source (the video file or whatever you are burning) against the data on the disc.
My biggest 'verify' is the playback itself :)
No problemo on the help and Happy New Year to you too!
