Hi all. I could use some advice. LONG STORY. My son has 6 DVD's he wants to archive. So last week I bought a DVD burner and some DVD+R disks and downloaded DVDShrink3.2
Yesterday, I checked my old back issues of MaximumPC and the April 06 issue mentions how to copy DVD's using DVDShrink.
So last night I tried the first disk. I just had it do a straight copy without modifying anything. It copied to the hard drive, ejected the disk and asked for a blank disk. So I put in a blank disk, closed the door and it started to copy the back-up to the disk.
(I thought DVDShrink didn't have its own software to burn a disk?)
It took about 30 minutes for the whole thing. I tried Nero 7 essentials that came with the burner to see if it was any faster. Nero copied the disk to the hard drive and asked for a blank. Then said it couldn't copy to the blank because there wasn't enough room. That when I realized that my sons DVD's were dual layer and DVDShrink was compressing 56%.
I had my son try the first disk to see if it actually worked in a DVD player. It works, but the picture is a little grainy. I managed to copy the first 3 disks with no problem. On the 4th disk it got to 91% and the program froze. No idea what happened. Had to use task manager to get out of it. Then a few minutes later, I got a blue screen. I turned off the computer and will try the last 3 disks tonight. Should I be worried? (Using Windows XP w/SP2)

So, I take it the Quality section in DVDShrink can improve the image?
Is there any other software that can shrink a DVD like DVDShrink?

Sorry for the long story and dumb questions. This is kind of new to me.

Try DVDFAB

http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm

Rip the movie to your hard drive using DFab the run it thru Shrink to remove any foriegn languages.

You May want to Rip the Movie Only.
Aalso use good Quality Blank discs (Verbatum or Tayio Yuden).
Burn at 1/2 the rated speed of the Blank disc.
Also you May want to look up the Guide for The Programs you are Using.
You May want to download Imgburn also.

Thanks for the help. I tried to finish the last 3 DVD's my son wanted but could not. DVDShrink refused to finish. Get to somewhere in the 90% range and then a notice that it was terminating. Looks like I won't be doing anything for a while. My computer became soo unstable, I kept getting blue screens, system restore was corrupted and could not restore, registry was corrupted. Nothing works anymore.
Only thing I can do now is reinstall Windows.

DVD Shrink might have worked on a couple of discs, but will not work on all by itself, especially the newer ones that have new encryption. Like it was suggested, get DVD Fab HD Decrypter tp rip the movie to hard disc and the load it in DVD Shrink.

The registry corruption and all the other stuff going on...should run an anti virus/spayware/malware program and check for any bugs you might have picked up.

Try booting in "safe mode" and run your anti-virus from there. Hopefully you'll find something, and you can then at least deal with it/them. Speaking from personal experience, have you a heat issue at all? Try this simple method, run you PC (not a laptop) as usual but without the cover on. When you get a blue screen or other message, touch and hold the metal frame of your rig with one hand then touch the CPU fan and ass'y along with the motherboard chipset heat sink and graphics card, and feel if they are hot to the touch. A PSU that's hot to the touch could also be a possible culprit, especially if it's only been on for short bursts. Are the fans on these units clean and clear? If you havn't already, avoid at least for now, re-installing windows. Work through some of the issues as you described, and you may get a better outcome. Fingers crossed... :)

EDIT: @cyprusrom. Didn't see your post before posting mine. Similar "page" though.

All 6 DVD's were from the same box. Some Japanese Animai. No encryption was detected by DVDShrink.

Computer: Asus A8V-Deluxe motherboard
AMD X2 3800+ CPU
1Gig Ram
256Mb 6800GT
120Gig H.D.
Sound Blaster L.S.
535W. Enermax PSU

System was built less than 6 months ago. Using a CPU cooler from a 4000+. ( this has lots of fins and heat pipes.) Computer kept in basement (around 60-64F)

As mentioned. Once DVDShrink started giving me problems. Everything went to hell. I thought mabe I should run it with the AV off, but it refused to turn off. I tried to un-install it and it wouldn't.
Then the corrupted registry and the restore point didn't help much. I tried doing a Windows repair last night. I think that nailed the coffin shut. After that, it got worse. I lost half my files, Windows installer refused to work. I got into safe mode but couldn't do anything. Like clicking on a greyed out box. Its format time.

Another point to ponder. Could my copy of DVDShrink have been infected? Google showed so many websites that had it. I don't know if I got a good copy or not. (Side note: I finished copying the last 3 disks using my computer. An AMD 4000+. No problem. I had DVDShrink installed back from May of 2006. Mabe I should copy this file to the other computer once its up and running.

A corrupted DVD Shrink zip archive...I don't know. Where did you get it from? Get the software from AD, it will direct you to trusted sites.
Download Hijackthis (is free), run it, open a thread in "Windows - Virus and spyware problems "( not that people that subscribed to DVD Shrink forum are not knowledgable:~)!), and post it there for someone to have a look.

Don't remember where I got it from. I went the the DVDShrink website and it had its own Google Search window to use to find it. I just picked a web site at random and downloaded it.

What I meant was that I downloaded this file a long time ago.(Forgot I had it on my computer) And it worked with no problem on the remaining 3 disks. So I'm thinking/hoping that this was a safe download I can use on the basement computer once its up and running again.

Does your son use any online chat channels, like mIRC and such? Very possible to get one(virus) if you are not protected. Do you have a firewall?
If formatting the drive, make sure you do it properly, otherwise you could still have some buggers left in the system.

Nope. Son doesn't do that. Or even forums. Using ZoneAlarm.

Note. I downloaded the DVDShrink as mentioned from AD. I also have a download from AD that cyprusrom showed from another post. The file names are different. I'm sure the two I have at home also have different file names. I guess you don't really know what you have until its too late.

p.s. I'm out of here for today. 10hrs at work is enough.
See you Friday.

There are two versions of DVD Shrink available. One the is original, the other is DVD Shrink set up to autoburn with ImgBurn. That could be the difference between the ones that you have, or you might have indeed a bogus one.

A small point, but neccesarry. There are "other" files available that are pay for. Don't be mislead, as Shrink is and always will be freeware. NEVER pay for shrink regardless.

Cheers all.

I guess I should've said "two genuine" versions of DVD Shrink...

Here is what Onya is saying about "never pay for DVD Shrink":

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/539803 and it looks like there is a bogus version with a virus in it!

cyprusrom, thanks for posting the link with regards to the shrink scam. I couldn't post same as I'm using a different machine. I hope I didn't "tread on your toes" so to speak? All I meant to do was to ADD to your posting.

Cheers.

Absolutely no "tread on the toes":~)! Only people that post nonsense are "treading", like when someone comes and says "I agree with previous 2 posters", or "yeah, good ideea", without adding absolutely nothing useful. No problem here though friend!
Cheers!
