Desperately seeking assistance. I am not great at hooking everything up. I have a Sony Bravia 1080P 50"TV and a Denon AVR-687 surround receiver. While my video is great, connected with an HDMI cable, my only audio option is an optical cable. I have disconnected the existing optical cable from our DVD player and connected it to the PS3. No sound over the receiver. Yes, I have my PS3 updates.
I feel stupid at this point as I've been trying to fix this for several weeks with no success.
The only way I can get surround sound from the PS3 with my receiver is to connect with the optical cable. Am I missing something obvious? It seemed logical to me to unplug the optical cable from the DVD player and plug it into the PS3.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. It's horrible watching BluRay discs with a great picture and listening to the sound through the TV. I miss my home theater.
im not positive as ive never used hdmi other than at my bro's house but im pretty sure hdmi does the audio too so maybe the optical might be interfairing with the hdmi's audio?... again im not positive so dont get mad if im wrong... oh and this may seem like a dumb question but did you choose all the correct audio settings on the PS3?
Nope. I didn't change the audio settings. That was my missing link.
I knew it had to be something very obvious that I was missing.
Thank you for turning on that light bulb in my head.
Is it possible to set the audio settings on the PS3 so it goes through the HDMI cable to my TV as well as the digital optical cable to my reciever.
I only want to use my reciever when playing Blu Ray movies, but when my Son is playing PS3, I want to be able to use my reciever for music in another room. The way it is now, I have to change the settings each time between gaming audio thru the TV and movie audio through the reciever.
Anyone know how to set the the PS3 to do both simultaneously?

It's one way or the other, you have to switch between output modes like you're doing now.
Hi, I have a problem with my sound. I think I figured out the problem. I am not getting any audio when I connect ps3 optical to my receiver. I had all of the ps3 settings correct. Still no sound. My receiver is several years old. A Pioneer. It does have two optical in, and one coax. I have always used the coax with my dvd player. The problem is I never set up which device each optical would be used by. The opticals will not work until they are assigned to either the CD, DVD, VIDEO, ETC. The thing is my Pioneer remote has some problems. The functions on the remote that I need to assign the opticals, do not work any longer. I haven't found a way to assign them on the receiver itself. Even though I still have the instruction book. Today I bought a universal remote, tried all of the codes for pioneer, no dice. Took that back. I found my model remote selling online for $80.00. BTW my receiver does not have hdmi.
I haven't bought my hdtv yet, but the one I'm getting has 3 hdmi ports.
What are my options besides buying that remote and hoping it works?
The coax is able to support the dts 5.1. I've seen some coax optical converters for around $20.00. I kind of want to be able to use more than one optical, though.

Update, I took my remote apart, 4 or 5 times and fixed it. I was able to change settings to make tv optical 1 and vcr optical 2. I turned off my ps3 after double checking the settings. Still no damn sound from my speakers. The last thing I can think of is buying another op cable. The one I have is brand new. each end is solidly lit when plugged into the ps3. I have no way of checking to see if it's my cable. No other device I have supports it.
Same problem here. Had to use my component cables rather than HDMI and the audio works. I have the same problem with my DVD player - no optical audio when using HDMI, but there is when using component.
Everything supposedly has HDMI v1.3 support. Oh well.
I'm sure it'll work for you too if you get component cables.
I got mine at Monoprice. Kicks a$$ something serious. The HDMI and component cables they have are better than the overpriced Monster cables.
