Hi all,

First and formost, this is my first post on this Forum, so if i break a few rules then sorry in advance. My question is simple. Does anyone know how to play wmvs from my external harddrive on the playstation 3? First, I had to change the file format of my USB 160GB Firelight from FAT32 to USB, so i could save serenity.wmv (10GB) to it. I guess FAT32 has a 4GB size limitation for files, so i converted my HDD to NTFS. The movie saved fine. I plugged in my HDD to my PS3 via USB port, but my PS3 wouldn't read it because of it being NTFS. The PS3 reads FAT32 with no problem, but will not read NTFS (probably because Microsoft invented the File System and Sony and Microsoft hate each other). So that's my dilema!!!If i leave my file system FAT32 then the PS3 will read my movies and even play .wmvs, but they have to be under 4GB due to the constraints of FAT32. If I use NTFS, i can make the movie as big as i want, but the PS3 will not read it. Also, all of my wmv movies are in 1080P resolution and that's my end result. I want to be able to play HD movies from my external HDD that i've backed up in 1080P resolution in WMV or any format the PS3 will recognize. Please help!!!

As far as im aware the only way to do it is to split the original file into 4gb pieces. I read somewhere on here what the software you will need was called, but i cant remember what it was now...im sure someone else will know tho.

The reason they are using Fat32 over NTFS isn't because of spitefulness to Microsoft, they did it so make ISO-booting off the PS3 next to impossible.

Besides, the PS3 HDD itself must use NTFS as I was able to copy a m2ts file that was 4.62gb from a DVD9 straight onto the PS3 hard drive. :-)

It seems that it is only external media that is limited to the FAT system. I have seen this on DVD players that have USB ports too, so I think it's a technology restriction rather then something that Sony have put there for any reason.

I can't confirm this as I don't have a HDD enclosure to plug the PS3 hard drive into my laptop. I am thinking to buy one very soon though. I can't see any other way the PS3 could store a file >4gb on it's hard drive unless it was NTFS.

See this thread... http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/621809

This tool is a must have for all PS3 owners that are HD video enthusiasts.

To repack the wmv into a more editable container you can use avidemux.

EDIT: I just found out that VirtualDubmpeg2 can also deal with wmv.

The internal hardrive on the PS3 is formatted in NTFS. External HDDs have to be formatted in FAT32 - I also believe this is a technological constraint as both my DVD players with USB only read FAT32 and my media player enclosure also only reads FAT32.

As I said. Thanks for confirming! :-D

I am thinking about buying a HDD enclosure so that way I can drop files straight onto the PS3 via USB on my PC. I think a bigger HDD might come in handy too! Like about 250gb... :-P

Still No one answers my question on how to get files over from an external HDD. Hell, i'll just stream it as a media server if i can figure that out. Are there any step by step guides that take me through WMP 11 and my PS3 or TVersity and my PS3?

By the way, the PS3 internal HDD is not NTFS. I found that out the hard way. See here...

ricanlova, it wouldn't matter anyway...

The PS3 has assigned a 2gb limit to wmv (and DivX) anyway. So no matter where you put it, you will have to split it in 2gb chunks! Alternatively you could try repacking it into a different container. tsMuxeR is meant to support VC-1 but it's not working so well (for VC-1, other video codecs are working fine) at the present... Keep an eye out for future releases...
