After having my ps3 since launch without a hitch, it stopped working. When i try to turn on the power, it turns on for a second, and the light quickly turns to a flashing red. Its not an air prob as its in an extremely open area. Luckily I have a 3yr warranty so i can go to Bestbuy and get it fixed or replaced. However, I had a few pictures and videos that arent on my comp but are on the ps3. I don't trust the bestbuy staff with my data as i will probably get a new console w/o my data. I need a way to transfer these pics and videos to my computer. Does anyone have any experience with this matter?

Maybe taking the HDD out of the PS3 and copying the data to the PC and putting the HDD back would work. Unless taking the HDD out of your PS3 voides the warrenty.

Otherwise, the only thing you could do would be to get it fixed somehow.

I've read somewhere that the bios of your pc recognizes it but it doesn't show up in windows. However, I can try a software recovery solution like GetDataBack for NTFS. But how will the 2.5" hard drive fit in my case? Wouldn't it not fit in my drive bays, which are made for 3.5" hdd's?

Hi sukhvail,
no experience with my ps3 Breaking and i dont want to either! removing the ps3 HDD will not void the warrenty as its in a different bit
yea so take the black cover out and the Blue pin and take your drive round your mates and put your HDD in. (ask before you take his out or they might think your broke theres get annoyed) then backup all your stuff then do a FULL format or so if you do take it back to bestbuy they cant see what was/is on there. if you do quick you can recover some data that was of it. and double check that its YOUR HDD not your mates!

I hope that this helps in the slightest!

Thanks,
Samuel

ok well if YOU can find a way of your comp from reading the ps3 filesystem then go ahead but i can almost be sure that (if i dare say it) windows wont read it but linux MIGHT. but your friend ps3 or any ps3 for that matter would read it

The PC wont read the PS3s structure or Harddrive format, the Harddrive can be reformated so that Windows can read it but then there would be no point in that as it would wipe everything on it.

Then i think i mite be SOL. According to this thread, swapping two ps3 formatted HDD's in a PS3 is impossible without formatting. I guess I'll lose my pictures and videos on my PS3. next i guess i shouldn't be that careless with my data.

Here's a thought, buy a 2.5" sata external enclosure, then hook it up to the usb ports of your friend's ps3. That should work theoretically. Assuming the reason why your PS3 isn't working is not a result of your hard drive being screwed.

As marcusita said, a PC can't read a PS3 HDD. See here... http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/625490

As you can see from that thread, it seems there is no way to get anything from your PS3 to your PC. If there is... I would love to know!

However, if you only want to recover the data for when you get you new PS3...

Here is a way that will work 100%!

Use your friends PS3...

1) Take out his internal HDD and put yours into his PS3.
2) Plug an external HDD or flash media large enough (must be FAT of course) to store all your data from the internal HDD.
3) Use the back-up utility on the PS3 (Settings/System Settings/Backup Utility/Back Up), this will send a bunch of encrypted DAT files to your external HDD but don't worry everything is there.
4) When you get your new PS3, plug your external HDD/flash media in and restore the data (Settings/System Settings/Backup Utility/Restore).

Hey Ryu, hows it going? The problem, from what i've read, is that when you put your HDD into another ps3, you have to format it, so i would be losing my data.

Oh, really? Where did you read that? You can't choose not to format the drive? That seems a bit silly of Sony to do that. I haven't actually tried but I figured that method would work for sure.

sukhvail, it doesn't say another PS3 wont read the hard drive, it says a PC wont read the PS3 hard drive which is exactly what my thread (that I posted a link to) was about too. As a matter of fact post 6 by qintoobli says that you can do what I suggested. :-D

Also, if you want to recover files back to your PC, you can use the method I suggested and copy individual files/folders over to your external media providing they don't exceed 4gb for an idividual file. If you have files larger than 4gb, I only know of a way to get them onto another PS3 hard drive. You will need to use the method I suggested. I don't know of a way to get files larger than 4gb from PS3 to PC.. Which unfortunately is my dilemma!

He clearly says he took his HDD and put it in his friend's PS3. The PS3 then told him to format it. I really wish I was wrong here, but according to him, im not. I might give it a go anyways, but i'm not counting on it to work.

My apologies sukhvail... I literally thought you meant THIS THREAD! :-P

I think that is crazy for Sony to implement that. Surely they should allow you to choose to not format the HDD. I can see no sense in that. Sorry about your problem.

Yep, sony really screwed me here. I'm going to get in contact with them and hope they have some pc application that can decrypt the HDD or something but I'm just grasping at straws at this point.

You do realize this could all be over nothing because it might be the HDD that is causing your PS3 to screw up in the first place.

I think it would at least boot w/o the HDD. At the most, it would ask me to format it. I ahven't heard any clicking noises or anything from the PS3 either so I don't think it is a HDD problem. However, you can never know. Meh, I guess I'll just lose my data either way.

From what I understand the OS (XMB) is not stored on the HDD. I remember reading somewhere that you can still boot up the PS3 without any HDD in the bay.

However, you could be right if the PS3 is crashing due to attempting to read a corrupt HDD.

sukhvail, have you tried booting the PS3 without the HDD in the bay?

The PSP certainly does but this is an altogether different kind of beast. I really don't think the PS3 would boot properly without it. My guess would be that it would start but you would get an error message before reaching the xmb.

canuckerz, you are right. My curiosity got the better of me. I tried to boot my PS3 with no HDD. It gives a warning that the HDD wasn't detected and you can't go any further.
