The InFeCtuS 2 - http://www.infectus.biz/ - looks to be our only hope at the moment for a PS3 modchip. One thing I am unsure of is this:
If it works out the way I hope it does, and I'm finally able to backup my games, will I have to buy a sonyblu-ray reader for my PC and backup the games onto blank blu-ray disks? Just cos the PS3 has a blu-ray reader, does not mean the games have to be on a blu-ray disk. I cant see why games publishers would fork out the expence of putting 8GB of game data on a 40GB blu-ray disk, when they could just put it on a DL DVD.
Does anyone know if the PS3 games are in fact on a DL DVD or on a blu-ray dik?
I just hope it all becomes a reality in time for Niko's arrival in Liberty City

All the games I have played so far have been on Blu-ray discs. To transfer them onto a DVD9 isn't as simple as you might think. The Blu-ray architecture is completely different to the red laser CD/DVD standard. I am sure most games would be at least 15gb anyway especially with the high quality audio and FMV I have seen so far. Also, Blu-ray discs are either 25gb (single layer) or 50gb (dual layer) but not 40gb.
In regards to the "Sony Blu-ray Reader" you mentioned, you will of course need to buy a burner. As you know, a reader will only be able to rip the games but not burn them. There are other companies besides Sony that make Blu-ray burners. I would recommend LG, they are making some nice drives.
Yeah, there were some typo's in what I wrote down. it happens when try to juggling online support, speadsheets, phone calls and forums. I am well aware that I'll need a burner to backup the disks. However, thanks for pointing that out to me. If I pointed out everyones type-errors on the forums I review, I'd spend my whole day correcting people on their grammer.
There is an online IT store in Australia that sells for very thing for reasonable prices. When I backup my xbox360 games, I use a Samsung WriteMaster DL DVD burner, as it matched the 162 reader I use. It cost twice as much as the other leading brands, but unlike my friends who back their games, not even one of my backups turned out to be corrupted. My friends typically used LG and ASUS burners.
So as far as buying a bluray burner goes, I would definently buy a sony one. It may seem to stupid to some people, but I believe that if the game is being ripped from via a sony reader, its best to stick with the brand and use a sony burner to copy it. It may cost a couple of hundred more, but its worth it. But hey, thats just the way I am :-)
Well, for what it's worth, if you want to stick with a Sony burner just because it's a Sony, I'd make sure they are the ones who made it.
I know with regular dvd drives, Benq makes a lot of Sonys drives. And you can buy a Benq a lot cheaper than a Sony.
Now, because it's a Blu-Ray burner, I'd bet that Sony did manufacture it. I'm just saying if you want to spend the extra cash just for a name brand, make sure it's them making it.
