Background: I have now successfully backed up 3 of my DVD "movies".

This weekend, I started on a new series of 5 DVD's, and all of a sudden I'm not able to get a completed back up?

I have all 5 DVD's decrypted and on my hard drive - as large, full-disc ISO files about 7900-8000 MB each. I then opened Shrink up and attempted to shrink the first one to 4300 MB (the instructions were also for Shrink to automatically open up DVD Decrypter and burn my backup to a Maxell DVD+R). Again, keep in mind, this has been successful 3x prior to this effort. I set it up to do this overnight, because it takes quite a bit of time on my computer.
Next morning, it had not burned the ISO file to the disc, however Shrink had "shrunk" the file to my hard drive, size 4400 MB.

First, why would Shrink produce a file of 4400 if the target (custom) size I chose was 4300? Second, why would shrink not recognize the cue to open up DVD Decrypter and burn it, since that is the instruction I gave it?

Tried the second disc in the series, same thing - didn't burn the disc, but shrunk it to my hard drive to a size of about 4400.

So I opened up DVD decrypter separately and burned the first 4400 MB file, the Decrypter "tune" sounded off that it was "burned successfully", but when I took that burned DVD and popped it into my DVD player (a samsung DVD recorder)- which had recognized my first 3 back up discs - a message came up that said "disc needs formatted. Format disc now?".

Any thoughts on why shrink missed the "target" size (shrunk to 4400 instead of 4300)?
Why shrink did not open DVD decrypter and burn it?
Why that disc needed "formatted" on my computer, when others before it had not?

thanks

Did you set the Target DVD size of 4300MB under Edit>Preferences...in DVD Shrink? A DVD-5 can only hold 4.37GB of computer memory. This could be the reason why it won't play on your set top player.

Did you try rebooting the pc when this started? Try if you haven't. What versions of Shrink and Decrypter are you using? How long does Shrink take to process the files before burning? Do the ? DVDs play on your pc or another player besides the one you mentioned? 4400MB file is ok if you're using good media. Did you try the default setting DVD5(4.7) size?

pryme,
yep, thanks for the tip; the target is always set to a size of 4300, so it would be sure to fit on a regular DVD. that's why I was confused when it reduced to 4400, not 4300.

It makes me wonder, if a DVD-5 can only hold 4.37 GB, why do my Maxell+R's hold 4.4 GB?

garmoon,
it takes Shrink about 2 hours to process the file before opening up DVD Decrypter to burn it. that's why I set it up to do it's thing over night, while I sleep.

Here's the good news: Oddly enough, I left the "project" for a few days, came back to it and retried the whole thing - shrink + DVD Decrypter...... this time it worked flawlessly. My computer had been off, perhaps restarting it fixed something, I certainly don't know.

The size of the file continues to be "shrunk" to 4.4, which is no big deal I guess as long as it fits onto a DVD.

Sounds good. A DVD5 can hold about 4464 MB, the default setting in Shrink.

Edit: If a program doesn't respond like it has been, my first attempt to fix it, is to reboot. Can't hurt a thing and usually works.
