Hi I'm hoping that somebody can help me. I have a dvd rw with a read speed of 16x.The read speed starts off at 2.5x and slooowly crawls upwards after 9 minutes to 5x and won't go any higher.ide transfer mode is ultra dma 4.


I uninstalled the primary and secondary ide channels and the dvd drive. I restarted and winxp installed everything but still the same speed. Why won't it read at 16x ?

What's the make and model of the drive bkbenjy?
You probably have a burn speed of up to 16x - the read speed is slower.
Some drives have riplock on there them which slows down the read speed also.
The condition of the disc can slow it down too - the more scratched/smudged etc they are the slower the read will be.
Then some drives will read slower on the ones w/ heavy copy protection on them. Not all drives do that but some do.
