Hello, all. I just downloaded DVD Shrink to compress some 3+ hour DVD's to backup and have hit a bit of a snag. I run DVD Shrink, it encodes the source DVD, then I burn, using Nero, to a Memorex DVD+R. Everything runs fine, DVD Shrink encodes the source DVD perfectly, Nero burns without problems, however, the burned copy won'y play on any of my stand alone players. I first tried it in my Sony DVD player, which is an older model, but supports DVD-R and DVD+R formats and a message popped up reading, "c:13:00 Disc Dirty". At first I just assumed it was the brand of DVD+R's I was using, however, the burned copy didn't work in my XBOX 360 which supports DVD+R or my original Xbox. The burned copy DID work in my computer, including the original movie, bonus material and menus, but still doesn't work on my stand alone players.
I did search, but didn't find any recent topics dealing with this specific situation. If you guys need more info, I can provide it. Thank you.

This is a DVD that you ripped? Not a case of the source being PAL and you live in NTSC land.

Also, what version of Nero are you using (7 or 8)? Others have complained that their backup copy would not play in a stand-alone player when using version 8.

I'm using 8, however, my roommate ripped and burned a DVD at work for me using DVDShrink with Nero 8 and it works on both of my stand alone players. I wonder if it's just an issue with some setting in Nero 8 or DVD Shrink that I need to change... I'm just not sure.

What's the MID code of those memorex?
Use nero infotool to find out and post back that MID code. Example:
Ricohjpn-R03-00, MBIPG101-R05-001
Those are 2 manufacturers for the Memorex +16x and they have multiple manufacturers in their older +4x and +8x. Those memorex Ricohs,I'll burn all day long. The MBI memorex are crap.
What's the brand name, model#,and current firmware version? Neroinfotool will also answer those Q's.
I had a sony dvd player and it gave me a Dirty disc error when it didn't like a certain format off a certain burner. Booktyping fixed this minor issue.
Other drives may display: No disc,Wrong format,Illegal disc, and wrong region when it comes to compatability issues.
Just because the specs says your drives will play both plus and dash, drives can be picky to any dvd backups. Here's the likely culprits to why the pc will play it and players won't-excluding if it's PAL like attar posted:
1) Format- try the dash format. Dash is superior to basic plus format, but to some extent. If your drive has bitsetting capability to booktype, the plus format will then be superior to dash. Booktype your plus format media if you have that capability. This alters the beginning of the backup, and sets it to dvd-rom,the highest compatable of all dvd formats. By booktyping to dvd-rom,drives will be fooled into thinking they are playing the actual dvd-rom format, just like original dvds and games are.
2) Certain MID coded media. Take brands like Memorex, outsourcing their media to many different manufacturers. A drive may be able to play the Ricoh memorex, but not the MBI memorex.Huge quality difference there. Most brand do the same outsourcing: Fuji,HP,Maxell,TDK,Philips. Stick with Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim to help eliminate a lot of issues.
3) Burn speed: Some drives may not be able to read backups that were burned too fast, especially if it was on crap media. Burn half the rated speed of your blank media.Example- Memorex +16x ricohs, burn 8x max. Memorex +16x MBI,4x max because they do suck. Get the quality media and higher burn speed may be obtainable.
4) Burn engine: Drives can be picky on certain burn engines. Nero gives me a higher compatability rate than dvd decrypter did. Try a different burn engine.
5) Sticker labels: Major nono in case you were slapping them on.Peel off and try again.
6) Dvd-rw drive: All dvd-rw drives are different. Your player may prefer the plus format from a certain burner, but the dash format from a different burner.. Keep the firmware upto date.Firmware controls the writing strategy. This writing strategy tells your burner how to properly burn that specific media. There's also some crappy drives out there-HP!!!!
At least your pc plays it,so it should be an easy fix. Just answer those questions. You'll have to find the correct recipe that'll play on all your drives.

Thanks for the help. I found a thread on the front page of the dvdshrink forum that corrected the problem I was having. I now save the compressed data from DVD Shrink to my harddrive, than I burn those files in Nero Express. I don't know how I missed that thread, but it helped a lot.
