Hi - firstly le tme offer my apologies as I am new to this and am sure my question will have been asked and answered many times before!!
I have been reading through your forums all day but as yet haven't found the answer to my problem.
Essentially I use dvd shrink to burn DVD's uning Nero 6. This has worked without issue until today and now I am unable to burn. The drive seems to be fine as I can still burn AVI onto cd using Nero.
I have had some issues with Nero so I have just unistalled, used the clean tool and have now decided to use dvd decrypter as suggested in this forum. I have made sure that DMA is on, I have bought verbatim disks, I have unistalled and reinstalled Shrink and updated the drivers for the disk drive, I have ensured that I am not writing too close to the edge of the disk using your advice.
My error messages with Nero seemed to be similar to other people but as I am now using decrypter the error has altered and I have copied below as I couldn't figure out how to attach the screen shot!
I/O Error!

You seem to have tried everything except to uninstall the channel that the burner is connected to.
You can do this in the hardware manager;usually the secondary channel - 'uninstall' and reboot.
This link refers to error messages generated by XP (not the burning program) - but you may want to try it as a last resort.
It doesn't do any harm - if done carefully.
Before making the registry change, you can run regedit, highlight 'my computer', click 'file' and 'export' the registry settings.
If necessary you can 'import' the saved setting.
The link says to uninstall any burning software before making the changes,

I know it is really getting frustrating now as it is an overnight thing - it was working fine yesterday. any idea why it wouldocntinue to burn AVI but simply not like DVD? I will reboot the channel now and reply with fidings.
Thanks for your help but I have a feeling I am going to need more!!

Quote: any idea why it wouldocntinue to burn AVI but simply not like DVD
You mentioned that it will burn CD's and not DVD's.
The reason may be because there are two lasers in the burner - the higher powered laser is for DVD's.
Download the latest version of IMGBurn (its the "burning only" part of DVD Decrypter, but has been updated since Decrypter was stopped).

Many thanks - will do this when I get home. I do appreciate your suggestion but am unsure if this will rectify as I was having the problem when using Nero originally. I switched to DVDD after reading through these forums.
Does the error message I posted in the original like mean anytyhign to anyone?

Tools > Settings > Write, uncheck 'perform OPC before write'
That (I think) turns off the power calibration test.

To save disks, when you insert the blank, on the lower left of the screen under 'Destination', check 'Test'.
It simulates the burn without writing to the disk.
You can see if there are any firmware updates by clicking 'Tools' 'Drive 'Check for firmware updates'.
Last, suggest trying a DVD+R.
Good luck.

I think your DVD burner is dead and the cd burner portion is working fine. You've tried different programs for burning with no results. There are two different lasers that write dvds and cds. If media change doesn't help, the only thing left is the burner. It was working before all this started, I assume. It stopped and nothing has helped. Get yourself a new burner $30-40 range at newegg.com and install it yourself-not hard.

garmoon - many thanks for this - I was hoping that wouldn't be the case but had a sneaky suspicion it may be. I have changed to DVD+R and it now works - what's all that about? Can anyone explain it for me??
Can anyone advise what burner I should be looking for to replace mine if the need arises?

As far as a new burner I can't suggest anythuing now I've been out of the loop on the new birners. I have the good benq burns and the new ones I would not recommend. PM cincyrob he has been up to date with new burners. Can't imagine why it will burn the +R and not -R unless it's not compatible with -R???
