Since the release of the new firmware version 2.20, the 2GB limit is gone, right?
I decided to get my hands on Planet Earth (HD) where each file is 2.1 GB AVI format. I transfered everything on my PS3, copied the movie on to the HDD .. then I tried to watch it but to my surprise the movie didn't play.
What happends was that, first the screen went black, a logo of DviX showed up, and then nothing. So I tried to "instant forward it" and guess what? I got picture of the movie, but the picture was frozen. Play doesn't work either. So basically the only thing you can do is, start the movie and instant forward it .... and thats it.
Here's a little information of the AVI-file I try to watch:
Video Codec: DivX6
Audio Codec: Dolby Digital 384 kbps
Size: 2.1 GB
And I've got the 60GB EU version.
Now ... what's the deal? Why doesn't the PS3 play this movie?

I read somewhere that the limit for divx movies on the ps3 is 2Gb/s with the new update.

Yeah sure, it worked as a charm on the PC.
Are we talking about the same update? I think they removed the 2GB limit since 2.20 update.

Yeah, I mean ... Maybe the 2GB limitation is gone. Could it be a codec issiue? Has anyone got a AVI file over 2GB to work on a PS3? Not streaming, I mean trough copying it on the PS3's HDD.

Is the file extension .avi or .divx? I believe the update allows for .divx +2 gigs to be played. Also, if the codec is XviD, it will not play in either container.

ALRIGHTy....so the exact same thing happened to me....i have the planet earth series as well, in .avi format and yes. after the 2.20 update they stopped playing all together. i have the exact same problem except i had a little different situation. okay so before the update i had the avi files on my ps3 hdd and they played just fine....althought they did not play the whole feature because of the 2.0gb file size limit, they still played up to the 2.0gb limit. however right after the update. all my planet earth files and every avi file over 2gb file just stopped playing. so something is up with the new update...sony needs to fix it ASAP!
