Recently i've noticed the fan on my PS3 has been coming on at a noticeable volume a lot more regularly, sometimes after only around half an hour game play.
This only seems to happen when i am playing a game (ie. not when watching videos from the HDD, or if the system is just left switched on at the XMB. The system is stood vertically, with at least 10cm open space on all sides.

This issue doesnt seem to have any effects on the game, and if i switch the PS3 off then immediately back on, the fan goes back to its normal level.
The only other issues i have ever experienced have been the PS3 randomly rebooting itself, but this has only happened twice in the 5 months i have owned it.

So, my question is, does this seem normal to you guys, or could it possibly be a fan speed controller issue, or something like this? As stated, i have only had it for 5 months, so i have plenty of warranty left.

Thanks in advance,
ibizaGTi

Its likely a result of dust build up, pick up a can of dust-off (or something similar) and blow the dust out of it and the problem should subside.

Ok, thanks for the reply. Hopefully that will clear it up then, as it would be a lot easier than sending it back to sony.
I saw a thread on here a few weeks back about a fan test (the one where you hold down the eject button whilst switching on), but a few people said it could be unsafe. I have a UK 40gb version, would it be beneficial to do this on my PS3?

Thanks,

Ok, so i now seem to be having some further problems with my PS3. I have had GTA since thursday and havnt had any problems at all with it. Today, when i have been trying to play, the PS3 will sometimes hang on the Loading - Mission Name screen. I dont think that the game has actually frozen, as the progress bar thing (text lighting up white as it move across the screen) is still going. If i press the PS button and Quit the game, the black PLEASE WAIT screen hangs for about a minute, then the system beeps twice and completely restarts.
If i leave the system switched off for a while and come back to it then it will sometimes work properly again.

I have tried deleting the game data and reinstalling but it doesnt make a difference. I havnt yet experienced this with any other games, although the fan issue has occurred with other games.
I have also tried a different GTA disk, and the same thing happens.

Thanks in advance for any replies

The same thing happened to me (mine got stuck at the starting new game and Cousin Bellic bit at the start) I quited the game and it also restarted. Im not sure if this affects this but i had something downloading from the psstore and i paused it and i managed to play without any problems to date "touch wood" :) Also i have noticed that while downloading something it increases the fan volume allot.

Fat PSP: 3.03 oe-c (will update when i have time :P)

Right, well i found out that the issue with GTA is a server issue they are having, and signing out of PSN has fixed this problem for me.
With regards to the fan issue, i cleaned it out but it still seemed to be louder than it should, so went back to my local Game store and asked them about it. The guy said to take it in and they would have a look. I took it in and they tested it, but the fan stayed quiet (typical...). Luckily for me though he said he would change it me over just to be sure, so i have a brand new PS3, and so far it seems to be running fine, with no loud fans :). I though this was a good result seen as i have had the system for almost 5 months, i was sure that i'd have to call sony up.

Thanks for the help guys,

There is a heat sensor inside the PS3. It works as a thermostat for the fan. If this sensor collects a lot of dust the fan will act up. Compressed air or a low powered vacuum will do the trick if you have problems with the new one.
