When I first started out trying to back up my DVD movies I was totally in the dark on what to do. I had to fish around different forums and boards to try and gather info on how to do this, which wasn't very simple. I figured I would offer this up to any people who are in the same boat as I was when starting into this. here goes.
1. Use DVD Shrink to rip/compress the DVD. This i sa great, free program that decrypts the DVD to enable it to be copied. It allows you to remove unwanted aspects of the DVD like deleted scenes, captions, etc. It's likely even after removing any unwanted parts of the DVD that it will still be too large to fit onto a 4.38gb DVDr, so you can also compres the DVD to what ever level it takes to make it come in under 4.38gb.
2. Use Nero to burn the file you created with DVD Shrink. In Nero, select DVD-ROM (UDF/ISO, which is at the bottom lf the list of options. After that, click on the UDF tab, which is to th eright of the ISO tab that should automatically be chosen to begin with. Under the UDF check the box labeled "Force DVD-Video compatibility mode. Once that is done, click the "NEW" tab, which is on the top right corner. You are now ready to go.
First thing here, which is the most important, you need to create a folder. The layout has the screen divinded into 2 sections. On the left is the UDFISO and on the right is your file browser. Go to the left under Name/Size/Last Modified and right click anywhere under that. After the right click, select "create folder." Name this folder VIDEO_TS, being sure to type it EXACTLY like that...caps and all. No wyou are ready to get you rdecrypted file from your file browser on the right.
Retrieve the file from what ever drive you saved it on within your computer. Select every file that you have there and drag all of them over to the VIDEO_TS folder. Now you are ready to burn. CLick the BURN icon (which has a red flame on it) along the top row of icons. Be sure you have a blank DVDr and select the speed you want to burn at. After that, just click WRITE, which is on the top/right coner. That's it.....just wait for the disc to complete the burn process and you are done.
I hope this helps at least one person. I know it would have been great if I could have gotten all this info from one source back when I was trying to figure this out.
One note. I have had the best success using the UDF/ISO mode. I have tried straight ISO and found that one of my DVD players won't read these. I also tried straight UDF and found that a different DVD player I have won't read these. However, using the UDF/ISO mode, both DVD players will read them fine. I'm nto sure why this is, but UDF/ISO seems to be the most compatible, along with checking the FORCE COMPATIBILITY box.
I have backed up over 150 DVD movies using Nero and provided I select UDF/ISO I haven't had any compatibility problems with any newer DVD players.
