For some DVDs, DVD Shrink prompts you to specify what region a DVD was meant to be viewed in. Region 1 is a default, and I do know that the US is Region 1. It says that if you guess correctly, DVD Shrink will decode/unlock/? it. I don't remember if it specified what would happen if I guessed the region wrong.
But another option was not to specify the Region at all, but I do not remember if it told you what would happen if you did not specify a Region at all. Oh, I think it said that it won't play in certain regions or DVD player. Is it talking about the DVD I am about to make or the DVD I am about to copy?
Anyway, my question is: What is the point of this step? What would happen if I do not to decode/unlock/specify a Region? And And would someone (Hollywood Video or Blockbuster) be able to tell that the lock on their DVD was unlocked/decoded?
Region free is what I usually set all my backups.Just tick the region free box. Sometimes shrink only gives region 1. Sometimes you can ignore it and procede anyways.Other times you have to set it to region 1.
As long as you're not sending any backups over seas, then region 1 backups are ok if you don't have to option to set to region free. If you set it for region 2 or higher, then you you probably won't be able to play it in a normal stand alone player. I never tried it.
Some stand alone players give a Wrong region error when they encounter compatability issues with some backups. My lil bro's sherwood gives that exact error when trying to play my inferior dash backups. Only a stand alone player compatability issue and not an actual region error from the backup disc.
No dvd rental company can tell if any of their original dvds have been ripped,so far. There's a good rumor the veteran members joke about, the Block Buster Trace chip. It's like a snipe hunt and we get a kick out of people who's worried about that trace chip. Blockbuster puts thin strip on their discs so you don't sneak the discs out without paying for them. We could have even gotten you worried about that chip, LOL!!!
Blockbuster has been known to give the first degree to suspected customers, but they try to scare them into confessing. I suppose if somone rented a dvd, ripped it,and returned it an hour later, that would be fishy.
I've always done dvd's as region-free, never any problems with them. I'm Region 2 if that has any bearing on things.
EbolaZ - However your question about Blockbuster et al looks far more than an innocent question so thread closed as Rent & Burn discussions are not allowed here. Forum Rules are in my signature.
