Hi Everyone
This is what I?m trying to do:
I have a Philips DVDR75 set top DVD recorder which I am using to record from various programs on Sky Digital.
One of my aims is to compile a DVD containing a selection of music videos recorded from the various Sky Music channels.
I have taken the resultant recording and extracted the .VOB files to my hard drive.
Using Womble Video Wizard, I have cut from the .VOB files the music tracks I want.
I have now got about 30 smaller .VOB files on my hard drive.
Using VOBEdit, I have combined these individual files into 2 larger .VOB files.
Using PowerDVD, these 2 files play perfectly in file mode.
However, when I now use IFOEdit to create .IFO files for these, the resultant files won't play !! ? They just cause PowerDVD to crash.
I must be doing something wrong.
Is it Womble causing the trouble? Or is there another step I need to take in order to make all the files compliant.??
Or Perhaps there is another software package that will do what I want??

Hi
The best solution I have found so far is TMPGEnc DVD Author.
You can import DVD files into this and then use "Chapter Cut Edit" to remove unwanted video - such as adverts and clips you don't want in your finished clip.
The only drawback is that it only allows editing to an accuracy of about 1/2 second (12 frames in PAL).
I would really like to do the same to an accuracy of 1 frame (1/25th second in PAL) but as yet I haven't found anything out there to allow this.
Meanwhile, I've produced some quite acceptable edits using TMPGEnc DVD Author and will continue with it until something better comes around

I appreciate your feedback. However, I'm a bit confused about your need to edit in TMPGEnc. I thought all your editing was done using Womble's MPEG Video Wizard.

Hi taclark
I started using Womble but found that it didn't handle the .VOB files properly and I was unable to join them (using VOBEdit) and make them work !!
"tmpegdvd author" does what I want but as yet only to 1/2 second accuracy.
I will try Mpeg2VCR next as suggested by Minion (Thanks !) and see how that goes.

Hi Minion,
Thanks for your advice regarding Mpeg2VCR - I've had a quick look at it and it may have potential for me.
Is there a tutorial anywhere that you know of ? - I can't seem to find the routine for joining .VOB files that you mention
I'll keep my fingers crossed !!
Cheers

Am I mistaken. . .I thought mpeg2vcr was made by Womble Multimedia and was the predecessor to their MPEG Video Wizard.
Womble.com refers to a product called mpeg-vcr (dash) but labels the associated download file mpeg2vcr, and this is what they say:
"The following is a list of some of the new features of MPEG Video Wizard, in addition to all the key features that its predecessor MPEG-VCR: frame accurate editing, fastest scrubbing of any MPEG editor, fastest frame stepping, and no re-encoding when editing DVD-compliant MPEG captures from the latest hardware boxes."
alanjames:
It seems that if you've tried the mpeg video wizard, then you've already seen mpeg2vcr. If I'm wrong, please let me know.
My experience with Womble's mpeg video wizard has been mostly great, although I have not tried joining VOB files. I decrypted a movie into one large VOB file (about 4 gigs)and imported it in. I edited audio and video, deleting clips, silencing and fading audio. It only took about 10 minutes to export because it only rendered the effected files. I then quickly burned the movie in Ulead Studio 7 without any rendering. Had I done all this in my alternative tool (Premiere) It would have taken me many extra hours.
I did have one considerable problem with MPEG Video Wizard. In another project, I tried to chop up sections of my large VOB file and export portions individually. My computer froze several times and the original file seemed to become corrupted. I gave up on this endeavor without determining if this was a one time problem that could have been caused by an external factor or if it was characteristic of MPEG Video Wizard. I'd like to know if others have had similar problems.
If you think education is expensive, try ignorance. Help! Please educate me.

Well I know in "Womble Mpeg2VCR" when I edit VOB Files the VOB files must only have One Video Stream and one Audio Stream and no other Streams, and if I ever did have a Problem I would Take the VOB file and Demux it and then Re-Mux it and then edit the File...And sometimes if you have a Problem with a Particular Vob/Mpeg2 File then Running it through the "Gop Fixer" will usually help because it fixes any Audio and Video PTS Time code errors and any Gop errors..It really came in Handy at times....Cheers

Hope this might help. I do exactly what you are trying to do. I use a small free utility called "Filemerger" to merge all the vobs into one big vob,(it takes a few minutes to merge 2 hrs worth) and then take it nto Womble Mpeg video Wizard, then edit, then write the mpeg 2 file by using the "automatic" selection, (that way it does not re-encode the file and does the 2 hours of video in minutes) and then use a dvd authoring program to author it with menus into a dvd. I have done dozens of dvd's and only ever had one problem one, which ended up being a problem with the original dvd recording (but as usual with computers it took me hours and hours and hours before I found out the problem was the original.
Hope this helps

Hi Bigeck
That sounds great - I like the editing accuracy of Womble, but I didn't realise the resulting Mpeg could be saved without re-encoding - this literally takes hours and hours !!
I'll give it a try
Thanks

No problems! Hope it helps. the only thing Womble won't do is join the vobs (well it does but there is a millisecond glitch were one joins the other)and filemerger will solve that problem for you if you mergre vobs with that.
I think that Womble defaults to automatic for saving unless you change it and it will only re-encode the parts which you have added a transition to. It will also only re-encode the audio if you edit the audio (other than just cutting and pasting ie: add fades to the audio). I have found that certain transitions alter the audio and as such therefore re-encode the audio but to be honest if you are using Tempgenauthor you can ask that to re-encode back to AC3. Anyway, I have found that as long as your DVD players are relatively new (dvdr 70 and 75 certainly do it)they will play the resulting mp2 audio.
In short I am already doing exactly what you want to do.
If when you are exporting the project (I use the red "record" button at the bottom right) if you click the details button it will show you what is being re-encoded and what is not.
I don't work for Womble by the way, it's just that you have no idea how many hours of grief I have had trying to get this system together and if it saves anybody else the bother... thats what all these forums are for.
Cheers! and good luck

I use Wompbe Mpeg2VCR to Join VOB files all the Time and I never experienced a "Glitch" at the Joining Point..But I do something a Little Different, Because Raw VOB files do not Have a Proper Mpeg2 Time code inbeded in the Header so it can cause Problems navigateing through the File while editing so i Put the VOB files through Mpeg2VCR"s "Gop Fixer" which re-writes the Gop time code which makes the File easier to edit and I don"t get any "Glitch" where the 2 files are Joined...I also sometimes use the "Womble Mpeg video Wizard" which is a More advanced version of Mpeg2VCR and uses a Timeline editor so you can add More complex Transitions and even add a different audio track or multiple Audio tracks, It is a More Full featured editor allong the Lines of Premier and other Timeline editors.....Cheers

Minion, thats real interesting, i didn't know that. I must try to see if that sorts the glitch out. Does it take long to put them through the gop fixer? It takes a few minutes for filemerger to merge them and i believe it can merge lots of other file types too and does not take up a lot of HD space. It is Mpeg video Wizard I use - never tried mpeg2vcr.
Cheers anyway for that tip - I'II try

Try DVd replica . this tool allows you to extract only the *.VOB files you want. If you can't viaw the extracted files with powerDVD or WinDVD you'll have to run DVDfab and let it create a new VIDEO_TS.IFO file.
I'm still searching 4 a better VOB-cutter tool.

Hello. I decided to write on this forum instead of starting a new one since it has something to do with my question. I had a DVD with VOB files that I made into one file and then opened it with Mpeg video Wizard. Then I made a few edits and exported it to an MPeg2 file, opened it in ULead DVD workshop and made a DVD with menu's and stuff. Then when I play it on my DVD player it is kind of blurry and has almost trails with any movement. Now I am trying to figure out why and when this happened. I'm thinking it was when I exported it from Mpeg video Wizard, which too 26 hours for a 2 hour video. Has anyone had this problem before? Thanks a lot to anyone who can help. I've had some good advice here and hope to be able to contribute back someday:)

The Mpeg Video Wizard 2003 Must have re-encoded the VOB files for some reason ,It is not supposed to if you set up the export options Properly and it should take maybe 5-10 minutes for a 2 hour movie...
You should start over again with your VOB file and when you export the edited file in the Mpeg Video Wizard make sure the export settings are set to the same specs as the VOB file, meaning the Export settings and the VOB file properties should Match exactly or it will re-encode the file.....
scenic: Have you tried "Chopper XP or Mpeg2Cut"?? they work well for mpeg/Vob files...

thanks minion! i had to change the settings on the export. BUT, there always seems to be one of those, I am still having the "trails" problem only with motion. The original doesn't have this problem, and since I didn't do any converting, I thought it would be ok. Have you ever had that problem, anyone?
thanks a lot:D

If it doesn"t Convert the Files then there should not be any differance in quality between the Input and Output files, The files allways look exactly the same on my system...Are seeing these "Trails" when you are watching on your PC or on your TV set??

the first time I was seeing the trails was on the PC when working with the last project I did. Thinking it was just the monitor, I burned it and they were on the TV too. But, that VOB had been re-encoded by Video Wizard, so I am waiting to see if they apear on the TV after finishing the burn on the VOB that isn't re-encoded. I am seeing them now on the monitor, so we'll see. Thanks again.

Thx Minie , I haven't tried those tools yet . U-lead DVD Movie Factory 3 seems to do his job quiet well. It copies the whole DVD to your HD , then you can sellect the scénes you want import those (mpeg) into Adobe Prémiere OR save them as DVD format files so you can burn those.
I'll keep in touch

I think a problem is:".VOB's can not be joined??? Why, they seem like a ,.DAT, multiplexed A/V 0 + can contain separate data that is what fuks up descrambling data.
... If u can except lower quality usseeeeeeeeeee

After a long testing period I'm keep using Ulead DVD MovieFactory 3 Disc Creator to extract *.VOB files from Disc to pc . Then using Adobe Premiere (with mainconcept mpeg2plug-in to export the premiere project)and finaly authour it with DVD workshop (again U-lead). I must say that the most people I worked out a project are VERY pleased with the result.
Ps: The only tool I'm still searching is a ripper VOB to mpeg2 in exchange for uleads moviefactory
