Sony recently announced at the E3 event that they were phasing out the 40GB model of the PlayStation 3 as well as dropping the price on the higher capacity model by $100 USD. That announcement however, was only relevant for those living in North America.

thank god i waited for the 80 gb in europe the 40 gig cost the same here at the moment so i feel sorry for those who forked out 399 for a 40 gig
the psn movies does not bother me as i do not have a credit card and even if i did id rather the physical media for collecting purposes and the price drop in games is welcomed by all and is seen as great value for money europe has to wait for to long for these tings and to spice it up we pay through the nose wile our us counteerpart enjoy cheaper gaming i hate this doble standard of pricing i wish it was universal for everyone

I don't understand why people are so hung up on HDD size. Extra HDD is relatively cheap. I just found a 320GB 2.5" SATA drive for $113. So if someone purchased a 40GB model because it was cheaper, it was probably because he/she realized how cheap it would be to upgrade anyway and had intentions to do it all along. Personally, if I waited for this 80GB model to come out, I would still have plans to upgrade the HDD, so it wouldn't matter. Show me a 120GB model for $399.
Yes, it's a good deal for someone who has been thinking of buying a new PS3 (especially if it comes with a DS3 controller) and is unaware of the ability to swap out for a larger HDD, but don't feel sorry for us who bought the 40GB version :P
