I recently began having problems with dvd shrink just wanted you all to know i have been using any dvd for sometime now in conjunction with dvd shrink to compress the movie and roxio to burn the image to disk slysoft.com i believe has the best programs for backing up the dvd's that you own because i have three kids these two programs have been a real blessing for me i dont know much about file systems or whatever on dvds all i know is i take the movie that i have bought and put it in my computer immediately any dvd takes the encryption off without me taking any further action i don't even open the program it works in the background i then open up clone dvd choose the drive that my movie is in tick next next again choose the drive i wish to burn to then sit back and it does it all for me slysoft programs however are not free but you can download and use for the first 21 days so if someone knows freeware that works this easily or good please let me know in the meantime if backing up your own movies is something that you are interested in try slysoft

If I had to choose I would go with CloneDVD! It's a supported progie and it's good like you said. ;) If going with "free ware" then looking at DVDFabDecrypter, RI4M (with DVDShrink & DVDDecrypter), and maybe DVDFlick would be some answers. ;) You can go here for some more ideas as LOCO has consolidated some good progies all in ONE place. ;)
Of course I like the burning/writing engine of IMGBURN and use it almost daily. ;)
There's some ideas for FREE stuff and a place to go find it. ;)

I have nothing against slysoft. I dont use it myself. I use an arrangement of ripitforme, dvdfabdecrpter{great support here}, dvddecrpter, dvdshrink, nero6, and nero7. With nero7 you dont have to have shrink it has the ability to shrink dvds. I'm a tester i enjoy all the different progs. I like changing settings and configurations to see what I can do. The only bad thing in this list is dvdshrink is CPU time intentsive.
If you dont have enough time or dont like messing around w/ stuff then sure point and click progs is fine. If your asking what I think your asking and that is is there a free way of one step dubbing, yea there is. ripitforme compiled w/ dvddecrpter, and dvdshrink. will do it. Of course you have to set it up first. Wait I dont think it'll burn. I belive you will still have to open something to burn with. I try it and get back with you.

locoeng the problem with dvd shrink was it started backing up real slow instead of taking 12mins to back up the iso image to a folder on my desktop it was taking 1 hour or more i had posted a thread about it and i got hints about checking my dma not what sure dma is but went through the inst. the best i could and it looked like dma settings were o.k. then started using another desktop and the problem disappeared for about two burns then it was back! i don't understand why but what i had been doing for over a year and 500 movies all the sudden was taking way to long thats when i started using clone in conjunction with any dvd my only concern and i am not real sure on this is the quality with clone may be a little bit "pixelly" i just need a little time to inspect the quality of the copies not had much time in the last day or two not sure of the settings on clone or what they do yet really just started using but as far as ease of use goes clone is that

Next time you're using Shrink, open you task manager, go to processes, and right click Dvd Shrink. What's the prority setting?
Dvd Shrink does utilize quite a bit of memory while transcoding.
Another couple of things you could check are; whether or not you have it set to run through Deep Analysis before transcoding.
And whether or not you changed the quality settings for better quality, as this would slow the process down a bit as well.

Just a thought. Have you cleaned out your DVD shrink folder. Over in the application folder it stores all those analizes. You might be at the max that you've allowed to be stored so some has to be deleted as your writing{"or paging"}. Another thing have you noticed any new applications running. Shrink the hog it is might be fighting with another gobbler.

I've never heard of or come across any such limit, and my Shrink folder had obscene amounts of movies in it last time i checked

We kind of missed the obvious. lol. Of course I may have missed it if anyone said something to begin with. :P What about a defrag and disc cleanup?? It sounds like a "transfer" problem NOT a cpu intensive problem. I can't see any of the settings in DVDShrink messing with the slow progress, especially if it was working well before. ;)

This limit I talking about is'nt imposed on or by dvd shrink but by windows and just these 2 post I take it ya'll are running the default setting. Anyway windows is set to only cach x amount. When you get close to that amount of data windows start writing over data. This takes time. Not time we can see it does effect progress.

13echo4,
Do you have SPACE available on your HDD?? I'm having problems grasping your issue. lol. It makes little sense to me and I've done 400+ movies with DVDShrink alone. :D
You're running XP Pro or something else?
More details for a knucklehead please. ;)

Yea somewhere we've gotten lost. I'm not going to brag about how many movies I've done. Yes I have space on my HDD. What I'm saying is you allow x amount of harddrive space for tempfiles. This area of your HDD will fillup then windows has to remove data as its writing new data. This will in fact effect dvd shrinks time. How much it effect really depends on how much memory you have and whats avaible. I'm noting saying anything other than that.

WEll that sums it up don't it?? lol.
Ok.... you know a little more about this than I do.... sooo can you go to that "file" and empty it out?? What about a fresh install of XP?? I'm just thinking out loud actually but something has to be done. lol. Like you don't feel the same way. :)
Doesn't "disk cleanup" address some of these issues or maybe CCleaner?? Again, your issue is the first time I've heard of something like it. ;)
good luck and please post back if you find something out or better yet cure your ailment. :)

I would'nt say I know more than anybody. Between you and me I dont know nothing more than where the power button is and the right and left button on the mouse is.
Yes you can clean the files out. You want to go to c:/Documents and settings/"your account"/application data and just delete the dvd shrink folder. dvd shrink will make a new one. This where your folder should be at for the analize logs. You can delete the output files right your done burning. On the finished window click on the blue link that says where the output files went and press "CTRL" and "A" then "Delete". You will deleted all that disc outputfiles.

I dont know if it will or not I dont use the utility myself. I manually cleanup. Have you got me confused with the OP? This is'nt my issue. This was my suggestion.

Quote: i'm using are hp dvd-r's
Those will probably code as CMC-MAG, not so great media. Try using something else such as Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, or Sony.
