Hey guys. I ran into a problem myself today. Despite whatever I do I cant fix it. I cant get DVD Shrink to run. If I click the icon it does nothing. Long story short I have gone as far as manually removing all keys and hooks from the registory and DLing a new stepup file. Still the same thing.
Check this out though I have DVD shrink backedup on a cd and you can run it from that disc. Has anybody seen this before? There is no lof file. Matter of fact if you watch the CPU graph it does nothing as if it is'nt calling on the cpu. Everything else works fine.
I do appreciate any any all feed back. I surely hope its a dumb thing on my part I'm overlooking.

Have you tried going into Program files and opening it from its own folder?

Safe mode did'nt work either. I was thinking The DEP had gotten ahold of it so I went into Safe mode to make a setting for I tried it out first still nothing.

Thanks for the thought. I've read that page along with several other reports a few times. When The DEP first came into effect I had a heck of a boot up. Everytime I booted up I had to go to Taskmanger and run explorer just to get going. Then things did'nt run right. It took me better part of a week to figure this out. Instead of just turning it off I make exemptions. I'm the only one I know of that had a problem with the DEP. I always make my exemptions in safe mode. I dont really know why. I'm just funny that way. I do the same when I make changes to the system configuration utility. You have to reboot for the changes anyway.

I did. Well sorta. Problem here is last week my son installed a game on here that was binded with deepthroat. I dumped the restore files. I only have 1 check point since and it did'nt help. I just tried installing Shrink onto a flashdrive and windows wont run it from there either. It will only run it from this danged 6 yr old cd. Whats biting me on the behind is it aint calling on the cpu. There is no error logs. Nothing new turned on that I can find. I cant tell if the cache is dropping it or why. I dont know why memory would have a problem carring it to the cache. When i open shrink off the cd I can eject the cd. close shrink and use a short cut I created to the exe. on the disc and memory will open it up. Reboot and I better have the cd in the tray or nothing, but of course I knew that would be the result of that test. At shut down memory let it go, the pagefile would have been deleted. I even scaned my HDD with CHKDSK, then I scanned my HDDs to see if it needs to be defragged. Everythings good.

Curious here - The few times I have had or helped someone else with this problem a re-install of DVD Shrink always worked - What is the OS?

Winxp sp2 And up to yesterday on updates. I cant find the update number right now. I have to agree any trouble I've had with shrink thru the years was easily fixed w/ a clean reinstall.
I know its driving me crazy.

I asked what OS because you said "scaned my HDD with CHKDSK" and I haven't seen that since Win 98. Are you doing a check disk with the "Check Now" option under tools in the C: drive. The one that runs forever on the next boot? Although I don't think that's your problem - I would maybe run Hijackthis after a careful search and some reading time involved on how to use this program. You seem computer savvy so that might help. Could be you have a Trojan or Virus. I hope you running AVG 8.0 - the free anti virus program. Good luck - at least you do have one option for running DVD Shrink - that good old CD. Jack

I boot into dos from A:/ andrun chkdsk. I've already ran hyjackthis several times today and yesterday. I love search enigines. If ir where not for them i would'nt what alot of those apps where that is running in the background. Could I? yea theres always that chance I have a virus. I thought of that mainly cause I just removed a backdoor kit off last week. And sence I'm only having problems w/ just one program it did make sense. I've ran dozens of scaners over the last {what 50?} hrs. There is nothing running thats blocking it.
Oh na. This cant stop me. I have 4 boxs networked into 1 console.3 of which has to burners each and my console has 4 burners on it not counting my 3 usbs and 2 labtops. I edit alot of video and pictures. Like you said I learned something out of all this that old disc is a gem. But even if that did'nt work I use nero7 to shrink also.

Not sure why this would happen, I would think that if it's not running from the installed file on your HDD it wouldn't run from the CD either???
My question is....have you or your son installed any new apps lately that would affect audio or visual rendering??
The game you installed could of altered some video settings that effect how shrink runs and is displayed. The other possibility is the installation of a codec pack like FFDshow, it's video and audio decoder/s can and will take over, and can negatively affect the way an application runs (it can do this with shrink).
I've also seen Nvidia's video drivers do this, you can roll back to a previous version, or uninstall what you have then download and reinstall updated ones.

13echo4 - With that setup I would quit trying to solve a small problem like you have with shrink and do a complete re-install of XP. Add SP 3 this time and start over. I have a similar situation and my problem is reinstalling software that has expired serial numbers. And yes some of them do expire - I had a small program I loved that worked with a pc capture card and I won't pay another 70 bucks for it again.

To be honest I have'nt done that yet. Did'nt think much about it cause nothing else is giving fits and I dont have any error messages. I have a little directx error fix tool out back that I've never used I'm going to dig it out and see what we can found out. Thanks for the idea.
Sp3 is'nt going to do anything. And if this was a serial number running out problem when I DLed the new setup it would have cured it. BTW FWIW DVD SHRINK is free I dont the serial expiring.
To update my attempts on resolving this. Alittle while I used the repair console to lay fresh windows files. Still did'nt help.

Aight finely I have every thing checked all issues fixed. Whew that was a mess. Nope it did'nt help.
Although I have found a bandaid if anyone wants to try to figure this one out. What I did was make an ISO image on my HDD of the DVD Shrink file I have on cd. I then extracted that image to programfiles. It works. I uninstalled DVD shrink. Even deleted the hooks in the reg. and tried to reinstall it with the setup file from AD, still no good. I even downloaded from another place. No good either. However the ISO image extraction works every time. Now whats going on?

Well for what it's worth I finally got this issue resolved. Over the course of these past few months I've had several apps quit running. Would do the same thing as DvDShrink was doing. VLC, itunes, and poweriso to just name a few.
The solution? {if you want to call it that} I turned DEP off. Everthing works fine on the reboot and has worked for 3 days now. I did have all these programs set in the "ecept what chose" option in the DEP setting. For some reason DEP would'nt let'em go. Turning DEP off is a sure thing.
Thanks yall that tried to help.

Do you have any security programs running?
Have you tried turning on DEP and adding DVD Shrink to the list?

I have no security programs running. No I have'nt turned DEP back on. I did have dvd shrink added to list before I turned DEP off. I'll try it FWIW. I thought DEP was a SP2 feature. I know I had dvd shrink working on sp1 and quite possible it was running on barefoot xp. BBS, Thanks.

When you click on Shrink I know it doesn't open but is it then listed in Task Manager as running?
