I decided to just buy a broken one off Ebay that has a good power supply. Since I have two with broken power supplies I will see what I can do to get them fixed. Is there anyone with some circuits knowledge that would be interested in teaming up to make a power supply repair tutorial? I have a degree in Electrical Engineering, but I dont really have the time to do it all myself.

what happens if the power supply swap doesnt work what else could it be? i plugeed my ps3 into a bad out let and now i have no red light at all and i have changed the power supply tht didnt fix the problem at all?
I have tried fixing thew ylod times before, and to my conclusion believe that its not the gpu overheating. Its the power supply.
I put rubber spacers underneath the power supply to let the air inside circulate between the board and the pack.
If anyone else tried similar and with sucess let us know.
What I did notice was that the console was alot cooler when I did this
That PSU is just a piece of crap...mine still works, and I am still thinking of upgrading to a corsairATX supply to prevent it from killing other parts. I bet going to an external ATX power supply would really cut temps.

Welcome to reality; these systems are built to be as cheap as possible, with little concern for reliability after the warranty expires. The PS3 has been around so long that it has outlasted slower, more expensive computers from companies like Dell & HP...and then people get mad when you have to make a tweak here and there to keep it running.
Sure, they could have built the PS3 to last, but the slim would costs $500, and the launch units would have been $1200+.
