All these sites have the 80GB PS3 for $399. They all also say that it is backwards compatible with about 70% of PS2 games. Isn't that incorrect? Sony said that they would be releasing a 80GB PS3 with the 40GB PS3's features.

This is the model I'm talking about:

Sony States:
Note: This model will not play PlayStation® 2 games, but is backwards compatible with PS one® games.

Does this mean all other online sites are wrong?

The new 80 gig is going to replace the 40 gig. It is the same as the 40 gig except with a bigger hard drive. The same as then new 160 gig that is about to be released.

So in other words, all the sites that state that the $399 80GB PS3 is backwards compatible are wrong.

I don't know about current prices, but I believe the "old" 80GB PS3s were compatible with 70% or so of PS2 games. But I thought this was all because of firmware updates, so the fact that the 40 and "new" 80 and 160GB PS3s can't play PS2 games is a bit baffling to me.

So you might be looking at the "old" 80GB models. Maybe?
