I've been using DVD shrink for years with no problem. Now when I click re-author I get an error message that says DVD shrink has encountered a problem and needs to close.
I completely uninstaled and rebooted and installed a fresh DVD Shrink.
The problem didn't go away.
It happens even if there is no DVD in the player.
I can't figure this one out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Man I wish I had a dime for every time that has been said here. DVD Shrink does not go bad on it's own. You obviously changed something. Have you upgraded any programs?
Is this a new movie?
Do you have programs running in the background?
Etc., etc., etc.
99% of all problems are between the computer and the chair.

I'm in complete agreement with Dialysis1 here.
Many of us here have been using Dvd Shrink for many moons. Dvd Shrink does not go buggy on it's own, there's another problem leading to it.
Maybe give us a bit more info.

Indeed to both replies. It sounds to me like Shrink has been asked to rip a brand new movie ie that it can't cope with and it's barfed and closed. The proof can be had in 2 easy ways - 1/ let us know the movie, from that it'll be a foregone conclusion if it's a new movie, and 2/ try an old (original) movie that you know Shrink can handle - i'll wager it (still) works fine with an old movie.

I beleive also that Shrink doesn't go bad on its own. But, keep in mind that I'm not a neophyte and that I have been using and
troubleshooting Shrink since I stated using it in 2004 and as I stated in the original message that no matter what movie, DVD or folder I try to use, (it even happens when there is no DVD/movie in the player), this error message appears instantly. It doesn't even try to open the re-author editor. My trys have been after rebooting.
What could be running in the background at this point that could interfere with Shrink?
I even tried with EMA enabled and disabled.
What else can I do!?

Consider this:
After I uninstalled everything that I could find referring to DVD shrink and reinstalled Shrink and opened my test DVD, all the test DVD?s data appeared immediately. Which means that the original analysis which usually takes a minute or two,
Had remained somewhere in memory during the deletions. So, maybe the DVD analysis that caused the problem in the first place is still in memory and causing the error/closure.
Anybody know where that file is located?

Thanks Creaky but, that didn't work as - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\DVD Shrink - doesn't exist on either of my hard drives and even if it did it would have shown up when I searched "shrink".
By the way; I found a prefetch file that was related, I thought.
But, after deleting it - the problem still exists.
By the way2; I think the movie that was in the tray when Shrink closed
was Scorpion King II which is a cheap piece of garbage that shouldn't have had any complications.

Of course that was the first thing that I did.
And like I said, my search of "all or part of file name" plus "anywhere in the file" would have turned up anything that resembles DVD Shrink!
All the "usual suspects" and all the basic troubleshooting techniques were explored before I joined this fourm.
Isn't there anyone out there that has had this problem before?

Phil what have you changed lately? That's the biggest determining factor in Shrink acting like it is. Check that first and see what you come up with. I'm thinking you did a Windows update or added a progie that Shrink is not liking. I would go here and get the version with IMGBURN as an option over DVDDecrypter or Nero for burning. jm2¢ ... ;)
...gm
add: you should be able to go into "program files" and access DVDShrink there as well.

It seems that the only things added since the last successful usage of DVD shrink were: Hotfix for media player 11 KB39683 and Windows Update for Windows XP KB33360.
I don't see how they could be involved in this problem. And anyway, I tried to delete them and my system said I couldn't do it.
I use Copy to DVD as encoder and burner. I doubt this could be involved as (like I said before) - I get the error/close message even before I
open the DVD movie!

Check your Data Execution Prevention.
Go to Control Panel > System and click on the Advanced tab.
Then click on Settings in the Performance box.
Then click on the Data Execution Prevention tab and click Add on the bottom. Locate the exe for Shrink and add it to the list.

At last something that goes towards explaining why dvd rip/burn tools barf out on some fista machines when they update with sp1 while others update and everything remains working. Damn those oem updates from manufacturers.
Next time I see one I'm going to check whet IE version has been installed ;)

Bingo!!
Thanks ricoh5006.
Indeed, after uninstalling Windows Internet Explorer 8 beta 2 from my PC DVD Shrink now works as it should.
My bad that I forgot about recently installing this version of IE.
But, who'd a thunk it! DVD Shrink re-author malfunctions because of a new version of Internet Explorer!!
It never crossed my mind.
Thanks to everyone who took an interest.

Is there or shouldn't there be a way of sorting by most recent installations. When I looked in Control Panel I didn't see the recent
installation of IE because the only date in the sorting options is
"date last used" and I haven't used IE since I installed it.
I'm still using the obsolete Netscape because I can't get new tabs to open for every site I click on in "bookmarks" on Firefox. I tried to get this option in Tools, Options, Tabs. It has "new pages in new tab" but it doesn't have "switch to new tab when opened from bookmarks" like Netscape does.
Should I go to another forum with this problem? If so, can someone direct me to it?

I'm just very careful what i install. For one i don't/won't (ever) install Windows 'updates' (pah! to those). As to browsers (in Windows) i use Opera primarily, sometimes Firefox and i never ever use the horrid Internet Explorer.
