It's nice of you to let me hang around even though you keep saying Im a "know it all" "big shot". Like Creaky said, it don't make you a "know it all" or "big shot" knowing how to do DVD copies. Many of us have been doing it for years and find Sony to be a nuisance, but not anything that stops the backups being done. If knowing how makes a "know it all", then the forum is full of them. If somebody didn't know how, who would answer the beginners' questions?

Getting back to the topic of the thread, Sony's AT IT AGAIN! New Protection. That's gotten to be nothing new. Sony started adding the more difficult copy protection and have kept changing things trying to keep people from copying the DVD Videos. Often it's more of the same type protections with a little difference in the pattern they use. The copy protection is meant to fool video recording software into seeing the video files as noncompliant or in some cases making them noncompliant so a recording program won't work. That makes the support for decryption and recording harder because it takes more time input. Some companies keep up better, but most usually get there. That's where the forums are good, they tell you when the software is up to date or not or what process is working or not.

With sony keeping up the enhanced protection people doing copies need to learn about apps like FixVTS and VobBlanker in addition to software for decryption and encoding. That's more or less the point I was trying to make. Some apps like AnyDVD have incorporated it, but new users wouldn't know unless someone told them. Many people still don't realize AnyDVD includes ripping software and it sometimes works when "on the fly" decryption doesn't. The free FixVTS has been around for a while, but the "backer uppers" haven't needed it much till Sony. The RipIt4Me incorporates it in a suite set up to do backups (including the more difficult Sony ones). None of these seem to be 100% all the time. But as updates are done, they usually cover all the new releases.

That may make me windy, but passing along the facts (which are stated all over the place) doesn't make me a "big shot" "know it all".

Here is a short history of Sony protection from James at Slysoft, it makes for interesting reading.

Quote:
History of DVD copy protections (not CSS):
The first AnyDVD version supporting Sony Arccos was version 4.0.4.1 from September 2004. If I remember correctly, the first Sony Arccos titles were released in Summer 2004. About the same time some titles with the "Puppetlock" protection were first released.
Sony's marketing blurb: http://www.sonydadc.com/products.copy.arccos.go
Most newer titles from Sony Pictures (and the companies they own, like Columbia TriStar, MGM) are Sony Arccos protected, but Arccos has recently been seen on non-Sony Pictures DVDs as well.
Support for "Settec Alpha DVD" (a protection created by a LG spinoff in Korea) was added to AnyDVD in January 2005. Settec Alpha DVD marketing blurb: http://www.settec.co.kr/eng/pro_alphadvd.htm
Madagascar (US) is not Sony Arccos protected. It is protected by Macrovision RipGuard. The first RipGuad protected title was discoverd around November 2005 ("Vet Hard", R2, Netherlands). As Universal and Macrovision work closely together (see press release: http://www.macrovision.com/company/...18%20PST%202005 ), most new Universal US DVDs are now RipGuard protected. Macrovision marketing blurb: http://www.macrovision.com/products...ard/index.shtml
A new copy protection "ProtectDVD" is announced here:
http://www.protectdisc.com/With_FL/html/products.html
AnyDVD does not support this protection yet, as we were not able to purchase a disc with this protection. Some people believe, that the rental version of "The Keeper" R2 (Italian) has this protection. We don't know if this rumour is true or false. We were not able to purchase this disc, so we cannot verify it.

Also, if you plan to use AnyDVD to rip, do not use the built in ripper, the changelog for the latest version tells you to use CloneDVD set in DVD9 mode to rip if you plan on using another program to compress and burn. The FixVTS that is built into AnyDVD is an old version.

Thanks for the history Arniebear. Sounds like AnyDVD could use a bit of updating, especially their ripper. I use AnyDVD along with DVD Decrypter and then use the latest FixVTS when I need it. That way everything is as up to date as that software allows, AnyDVD for the copy protection and the latest FixVTS to repair file structure. I noticed the RipIt4Me is using the later version of FixVTS. Lucky for us the software writers are staying on the ball. Thanks to you and others, the word gets out here on the forums.

Are we quiet done with this thread ??? It seems to keep dragging on for no reason whatsoever. Let's drop it, this is kinda childish........Thank You

Driver style decrypters (work in the background and make DVDs appear unprotected and region free):
AnyDVD, DVD Region+CSS Free, and DVD43 (I can't say enough bad things about DVD43, personal thoughts)

Ripper style decrypters (decrypt while ripping the DVD files to the hard drive):
DVDFab Decrypter, the AnyDVD ripper, and DVD Decrypter are 3 of the better known. Programs not being updated like DVD Decrypter become obsolete and don't work properly with newer protections. DVD Shrink also suffers from lack of support with the decryption software.

Decryption and bypassing the copy protection is the first step in a backup and probably the most important. If you can't decrypt and bypass the copy protection, you have to give up before getting started. But with Sony (and some others), just having a decrypted set of files doesn't insure they will transcode. That's where editing with FixVTS and/or VobBlanker helps. With decrypted files that are DVD compliant most of the transcoding apps will work and with compliant files, the burner apps will work.

Transcoders and Encoders:
DVD Shrink, Recode2, DVDRebuilder, CloneDVD2, DVDCopy5, and a host of others. Most will do the job, some with less output quality than others.

Burners:
As long as the files are compliant, most will do the job. Nero, VSO, DVD Decrypter, ImgBurn, and others.

This is nothing new but maybe seeing it together will help the beginners. Decrypt, Edit for compliance as necessary, transcode, and burn is all there is to doing any of the movies so far. Like Arniebear, others, and I have been saying, a lot is in the choice of the software and its proper use. Nothing much has come of the setec protection.

There are problems to be faced with the hardware. Hardware and media compatibility happens fairly often and hardware failures. Add that to the recording problems and a beginner can really get mixed up. Luckily there are relevant threads like this as Creaky pointed out. (Hope you don't mind my paraphrasing you creaky.)

I hope the post here was a help for beginners to understand and some of the more popular software was listed. It's all old hat, but maybe some of the beginners missed it. Follow the steps with the right software, that's up to date, and even the more difficult Sony DVDs can be copied for backups.

@creaky

Happy New Year buddy. Great minds think alike. Is it just you and I (the 2 luckiest members here at AD) that can rip any DVDs with DVDFab Decrypter?

You know I keep thinking to myself, ok this time if DVDFab Decrypter can't rip this title, then I'll fire up my RipIt4Me, but for some reason I "never" had to at all. However, sometimes I'm bored and yes... I did tested (usually ripped) with RipIt4Me after DVDFab Decrypter and both passed successfully as usual.

Best of luck to all!!

Isn't DVDFab Decrypter the decryption software from DVDFab Platinum and Gold, except for a few bells and whistles? I noticed they share the same version number. I've used DVDFab with good results. I got used to DVD Decrypter though and never gave it up. I started using AnyDVD with it before LUK stopped support. Like they say, more than one way to skin a cat. I'm glad we've got all the different options.

- i guess so; i say that as i know it's the freebie one but i don't know what the Platinum or Gold actually give over the free one. Basically back when DVD Decrypter was no more i was reading the threads one day and i read about the DVDFab Decrypter freebie (i think it was one of arniebear's posts actually), i tried it and it worked so stayed with it. I get a bit lazy and happy with what i'm using (most of the time) so if something works i stick with it and just lurk on threads for other programs until such time as i (might) need alternatives.. i'm lazy and fairly informed

@PacMan777

Yes, DVDFab Decrypter is the same ripping/decrypting engine as DVDFab Platinum. It's basically the FREE version of DVDFab Platinum, from Fengtao (the author behind DVDIdle Pro and DVD Region+CSS FREE).

Fengtao has rised up and introduced DVDFab Decrypter (totally FREE) to the public since last June 2005, when DVD Decrypter (from LUK) was shutdown by Macrovision.

Mr. DVDFab aka Fengtao has done a wonderful job to update all of his tools weekly (frequently) just to handle any of the latest encrypted protections by the big guys (SONY and Macrovision) just like AnyDVD. Instead Fengtao provided us his free ripper aka DVDFab Decrypter at no cost.

When I first started out as a newbie, I used nothing but DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter (from LUK). Then once DVD Decrypter got shutdown and forced to cease it's development, I got my hands on DVDFab Decrypter and so far it has never let me down. Soon I got to mess around with VobBlanker (specifically to edit/blank/edit unwanted junks like FBI Warnings, rating logos/screens, unwanted Extras, etc.) plus it will filter left over "unreferenced cells or tiny corrupted vts, etc."

Actually, I was introduced to DVD-RB Pro by 2 good buddies of mine "Mort81 and Arniebear." Then "quality" came to my mind, curiosity leaded me to another level, that's when I got a hold of DVD-RB Pro and CCE SP. Eventually, RipIt4Me (DVD Decrypter + FixVTS) aka "the new God of Ripper," which is the newly designed and improved "PSL plugin" via DVD Decrypter and PgcEdit came along. There's no doubt, RipIt4Me (DVD Decrypter + FixVTS) is one of the best FREE method beside DVDFab Decrypter, in my humble opinion.

In constrast, there are a lot of methods to rip and backup DVDs regardless if it's "FREE or retail," it's just a matter of how we use these awesome tools to complete the job.

GOD bless AD and cheers to you, you're doing great helping newbies or those that needed helps (i.e. willing to listen).

I forgot, thank you to Creaky, you posted on the decrypter info first. LOL Fengtao is more generous than a lot of retail software companies. They give away the free DVDFab Decrypter and Slysoft jacks the price of the AnyDVD. It's supposed to take a $10 jump (to $49) in January.

I have AnyDVD but use it rarely, as long as the great people of RipIt4Me keep it updated, that is my program. Still cannot beat the freeware. It just has a slight learning curve, once you get it down there are no problems.

I have a computer illiterate brother-in-law who uses RipIt4Me. I set it up for him. He has to remember to keep enough hard drive space on his system. Other than that he uses the one click method and his movies come out good. Of course he isn't editing for improved compression. I guess I did the learning curve and he reaped the benefits. Nice guy though, he gave me a Wobble Bob and a canister of Sony DVD +R discs for Christmas.

My brother in law needed help backing up his copy of Shottas, and we also used DVDFab3, movie only. It would not work full disc, even after updating the program. And for future reference, I tried Ripit4me and it wouldn't work at all. I updated ripit4me and still no success.
Is there a (free!) process for full disc on the newer Sony releases?

maybe DVDFab isn't able to do that movie yet via fulldisc mode.
also, fyi - I personally only ever do movie only as all the extras and other crap is on the original DVD (and i rarely watch them on the originals either) :)

edit- lately i've been subscribing to a few DVDFab threads over at cdfreaks where Fengtao himself posts & replies to posts re the awesomw DVDFab..
