First off are you trying to rip the movies using Shrink? It is no longer updated and cannot handle some of the newer titles. If you are talking about encoding, first you should check and see if your DMA is still on. Here is link to help with that.

When you click backup and go to Quality Settings, are either one of the boxes checked?

Suddenly sounds somewhat ominous,in saying that it could be anything, might pay to do a virus & spyware scan,if that comes back ok,run ccleaner & do a cleanup & registry (the two buttons at left of the apps GUI),then i would boot to safemode & do a defrag,it will be slow doing a defrag this way but will be more thorough as your not having to contend with too many open programs, would pay before booting to safe mode & disable hybernation by unticking the box assuming you have xp,you're system specs would help others in determining what issue you have
i.e
amount of ram
size of cpu in GHz etc

its probably a DMA issue with you're ODD. if you're in PIO mode instead of DMA mode that will cause a slow down you can check it in device manager, if it is in PIO mode uninstall the IDE controllers reboot and let window install them correctly or use this guide

your system specs are fine just clean your system(disc cleanup and defrag) and get the drives back in DMA mode and you should be fine
