A couple of days ago, my PS3 started to have difficulties with the disks especially the blu ray ones. At first I assumed that it's was overheating because I have it in a low shelf under the TV and it doesn't cool very well there. So I moved it to an open upper shelf and left it there for a few hours. After that I tried to play again and for about 10-15 minutes it was playing just fine. But then it stopped working properly (I was playing NBA 2K8 and the commentators stopped talking and when I tried to quit the PS3 froze).

After this, I assumed that either the lens was broken or it just needed cleaning (or the whole drive). So I opened up my PS3, removed the drive, opened it up as well and cleaned the lens with a special lens cleaning liquid and those ear cleaners (I forget their actual name)and I closed it just fine.

When I reassembled the PS3 though the drive would not take the disks in. I'm not sure if it runs but it's hatch is broken or it doesn't work at all. I'm sure that I replaced every single connection/wire to the appropriate place on the circuit board of the drive.

Can anyone please tell me what could I have done wrong? Could a mechanism responsible for taking in the disks moved out of place? Is it possible that a connection was not made properly? If anyone has any idea of what is wrong please let me know. I've already located a new blu ray drive for replacement (as a worst case scenario) but please if anyone has a clue of what happened please let me know.

I'm going to ask one question as I didn't see this answered, but did you try doing so with the case off first? If that doesn't work; put the game disc back in next and start it up. I'm just guessing but if I'm right when lock up happened there was a game in there, and order for it to eject it may still need to sense its there. At least this way you can make sure the mechanism isn't messed up by seeing if it will eject the disc.

As far as the unit being underneath that can actually better so long as its not enclosed in paneling, glass or wood (i.e. an entertainment media hutch). Only reason I say better is that if you've got duct air cooling in your house normally its going to be near the floor. What better way to keep it cool than being near this kind of outlet?
