Don't worry, this isn't a n00b question, lol!

I want to install linux. If I back up to an external hdd, can it back-up your hdd games because i really dont want to lose all games i have. this is actually using backup utility on the system settings. thanks.

Your HDD games would only be the ones downloaded from the PSN store and you are able to download them again if you needed to.

1) Get an external USB HD
2) Plug it to the PS3
3) Go to "backup utility" on the system settings
4) Follow on screen instructions (as an extra precaution backup your gamesaves to a thumb drive just in case)
5) When it is complete, format PS3 for the use of other os (10gb for Linux)
6) When format is completed go back to backup utility on the system settings and reload your info back to your PS3
7) Done... well except for installing Linux. I suggest Yellow Dog 6 http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/resources/ftp_mirrors.shtml you could either donload there or hit the torrents. Burn it to DVD and of you go!
