I was hoping someone would be able to help me with this issue before I throw my computer out the window.

I have recently begun trying to backup my DVD's using DVD Shrink (and Nero 6 as recommended). I had tried older versions (3.1.2, 3.1.3) and every time I tried, it would start and seem to go just fine and start to automatically burn, but once it got at about 80% complete in the burn process it would give me a recording error.

I downloaded 3.1.4 the other night and screwed up one more disc, but as usual, I kept trying. I had been playing with the compression and other settings trying to get it to work.

All of a sudden, I completely burned the DVD "Lost in Translation" and "Bourne Identity", and even re-authored the wide screen version (both wide and full are on the same disk) of "Blast from the Past". I was elated and hoped everything was now fine, but then I tried "Pirates of the Caribbean" and I went back to getting the error at 80%... (It looks like it burn to about 1/4" to 3/8" of the outside edge of the DVD where it stopped.)

Any suggestions?

I was using bulk purchased generic (swap meet) 4X +R. I may have answered my own question last night (and probably what you were going to say next)...

I reloaded Shrink and Nero 6 and I tried two more times to burn "Pirates of the Caribbean", failing both times (on generic blanks).

Then I tried a Memorex 4X +RW (so I wouldn't keep ruining DVD's).

That worked perfectly.

Next I tried a Verbatim 4X +R since I was starting to feel confident that I was using crappy blanks earlier.

That worked... Then I burned the two "Lord of the Rings" perfectly after that.

I think the generic DVD's have to be the problem. I wish there was a burning program out there that would be a little more forgiving and do something other than spitting out the bad DVD with an error.

Does anyone have any ideas to make these DVD's work? Or would anyone like to buy 85 coasters? ;-)

Hi y2kpony, I see you answered your own question. Cheap media is a very common problem in dvd backups. Most Newbies look for the cheapest price thinking they got a good deal. But after adding in the lost cost of many coasters, it ends up costing more per disc than if a good quality media was purchased in the first place. Sometimes a firmware update will help burn cheap blanks but there isn't much else you can do but use them up and take the loss. Welcome to the club.
