dear friends and gurus, i hope you can help!
okay, here's the scoop! so i have a brand new disc: the brothers grimm. JUST took it out of the package. cyclic redundancy check error.
and i have 2 others i'm having the same problem on...
fool's gold (been played only a few times)
cassanova (pretty scratched)
i've wiped off the discs. for cassanova i even used my data doctor to resurface. no luck.
keep getting that CRC error. however, i've been burning a lot of movies and these are the only 3 having problems, so it's not my equipment.i'm actually decrypting another right now... no problem (knock on wood!)
i looked at the other forum postings, but they seem fairly old... the one i was about to try is from november 2004 the problem is they reference shrink vsn 3.5.1.0 but i have 3.2.0.15 ... and i have no tools/settings options.
any other tips?
thanks soooo much!

What programs are you using so we can see if that's where the problem lies.

If you are trying to use DVD Shrink to rip to your HDD, then more than likely that is the problem, as Shrink has not been updated in some time and cannot handle the newer encryptions. Instead try DVDFab HD Decrypter to rip to HDD. Then use Shrink to fit to DVD-5 disk.

okay, i feel like such an idiot, but i don't understand all of what has been posted. i'm sorry! i think i'm in over my head here. not in kansas anymore!!! :)
per ur questions, i'm using dvd shrink. that's it... i decrypt and shrink with it. also, it used to give me an error message when it went straight to burn with nero, so i turned that part off and now it says the video output files are in my folder/video ts... i was burning ALL the files in that folder. do i only need to burn the one?
then i use nero "smartstart"to burn it.
i'm nervous about downloading random software that might have viruses? a friend gave me shrink and swore up and down that it's safe. i've only been using it a few months. :)
okay, off to check out some of the links you posted. thanks soooo much!

Don't worry, neither the Admins of the site, the regulars nor the moderators will give links to virus-ridden crap nor promote unnecessary rubbish. We only recommend stuff that we use or know about ourselves.
Plus have no fear, IQ-challenged idiots who endlessly spam this site with dodgy software are swiftly booted out the door along with their useless software :)

That's as simple (and free) as it gets. I myself no longer use DVD Shrink, but there's still plenty of life left in Shrink yet.

Dvdfab HD Decrypter is a free version that is still being updated.
Run the results thru dvd shrink to compress the files.
Imgburn is a better burn program that is also free.

so it sounds like these movies are beyond shrink's decryption capabitilties... yes?
if i need to get another type of software to supplement can you please give me some recommendations or point me to a forum where that's discussed? ideally i don't want to pay much (if any) money... under $50... and would want something that def wouldn't have malware/spyware/viruses in it... as you can tell i'm not terribly technically saavy.
ALSO how do you run something WITH shrink? i don't understand that... i hit open disc, it analyses, then i hit backup. that's it. how would i use another program in there? thanks!
YOU ALLLLL ROCK! and i'm sooo impressed by the quick replies! what a hot forum!

so, the main question is... how do i get DVDFab? i mean where is a safe place to get it? What is HDD? (none of these movies are high-def? that i see anyway?) what is a DVD-5 disk? I"m using DVD+R 120 min/4.7GB? how do i just use the shrink part of DVDShrink? too many questions, i know. but THAAAAAAAAAAAAAANKS!

absolutely. Though as we've said, Shrink is still great, it just needs help with newer encryptions as it's stopped being updated loooong ago, DVDFab is just one (free) way of dealing with the encryptions, then you just point DVD Shrink at the files that DVDFab has ripped..

hard disk drive :)
Originally posted by goodgrrl: so, the main question is... how do i get DVDFab? i mean where is a safe place to get it?
from the author's site - http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm - just click on 'DVDFab HD Decrypter 5.1.0.0' - it's updated frequently so either just go looking for a new (free) update next time you hit a movie that Shrink or your current version of DVDFab can't do, and/or subscribe to this thread here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/583712 so you'll always know if a new update is out.
Of course there's many other programs out there, free and payware, most of us use a bit of both, but at it's simplest level (and i swear by simple!), just add DVDFab to your current way of doing things; you can always tinker with other things later. Or not :)

no these are all normal-def movies, well so far anyways. DVD-5 disks are 'single layer' ie 4.7GB disks, DVD-9 are dual layer. I don't/won't use dual layer myself, so i'll let the others answer the rest, plus Shrink is easy, i'll wager there's a guide to it one of the other guys' signatures..

You can get dvdfab HD Decrypter here. This is the free link to their site.
http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm
4.7GB disks are single layer disks refered to as dvd5 (4.7 rounded up is 5).
Imgburn is highlighted, click on it and it will take you to where you can download it from here, also for free.
HDD is short for Hard Disk Drive.
Thanks Creaky. I can see your bone footprints have beat me to the answers twice. Just because I'm using my mobile as a modem for my laptop. Oh well, nothing wrong with the same good advice given twice.

No worries. I used to post a lot of forum replies with a Blackberry years ago, usually walking around at lunchtime (yeah, sad i know). But they started charging for internet use so i stopped. Skinflints.

I have nearly 1/2 of my postings thru my mobile. At work or at home (yes, I guess I'm addicted to internet and this aD site here) I use my data plan from t-mobile to its full extent. Luckily they haven't changed their TOS on their unlimited data access plan and have made them pay for it to the fullest extent by either using the mobile web browser (opera mini) or using the mobile as a modem.

Here is a LINK to a guide for using Shrink, although you may already be familiar with the process.
So after you have downloaded DVDFab HD Decrypter and installed it, put in your original disk and rip it to your hard disk drive. Here is a LINK to a DVDFab tutorial.
After that is done open up DVD Shrink and in the open file drop down locate the movie files on your hard drive and process them, just as you would have straight from the disk.
All that is left to do is burn the results. You can continue to use Nero as you have in the past, but like rtm27, I use and prefer ImgBurn. It is free and will provide you very good results.
P.S- When you download DVDFab you will have a free 21 day trial of DVDFab Platinum. Take the time to experiment and get to know it as you can do everything from within that one program should you wish. Rip,shrink, and burn, among many other things. You may find that it is worth the purchase as many of us have. Good luck and keep us posted as to your progress.

Thanks sooooo much, i'll get right on it!
Just to clarify, is this what i'm doing? downloaded software (thanx for the link!) i open the disc, decrypt it, save that into its own folder? then do i just use "open files" on dvd shrink instead of "open disc"? do i still hit "backup?" or is the other software now making my "backup?"
thanks again!

That is correct, you still hit backup, as you need Shrink to compress your ripped files so that they can fit on your disk.

I'm in the process of DVDFab-ing Casanova. It estimates 50 min. does that sound about right? I'm using DVDfab 9 (rather than 5)
still having trouble with the sex and the city disc 5 tho... after 6 hours it only decrypted 4.3%. grrrrr ;)
thanks, all!

What's DVDFab 9? If you're using the "free" one, then it should be DVDFab HD Decrypter. Get the latest 5112 here http://www.dvdfab.com/download.htm?vid=avangate&aid=689
50 mins for ripping is way too long. It should be either 8 - 15 minutes for DVDFab HD Decrypter to rip. Sounds like your DMA is in PIO Mode, uninstall your driver via either Primary or Secondary and reboot/restart your system and have Windows reinstall them back.

ya, that's the version i downloaded. i'm using the free version (not platinum or gold) it said "rip using DVDFab9" in the bottom left corner. You could change it to say DVDFab 5.
How exactly do I unintall/reinstall the DMA. It's been going for 30 min so far and is at 67%....
thanks!!!!

okay, off to more questions...
I let DVD Fab finish since it was already so far along... and it completed just fine.
I went to DVD Shrink and clicked open files. Fab had apparently created a fold that said "Fulldisc" and "CASANOVA" under that with separate folders for AUDIO TS AND VIDEO TS. I selected the whole Casanova folder. DVD shrink starts to open it and then i get an error message about 1/2 way thru its analysing phase that says it can't open it. I did this 3 times. The 3rd time it worked. Now i'm in backup... and it seems to be fine so far.
Was I doing something wrong?

Strange, DVDFab was able to do this movie fine, quite a while back, looks like it was a couple of years ago.
Anyways, it could be that DVDFab didn't quite rip it 'cleanly' enough.
Have we mentioned vobblanker in previous replies ?, as that's worth using to 'clean up' after DVDFab hence should leave nothing for DVD Shrink to whinge about..

When you go to shrink the files, use the video_ts folder, as that is where the files will be contained at.
Sometimes you need to use fixvts after using dvdfab, as dvdfab sometimes does not give the cleanest rips. Using fixvts just takes a few minutes to process the files.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh i am so frustrated!!!!
okay, it was backing up just fine and then at the very end said "dvd shrink encountered an error and cannot continue. Programming error - exception occurred. The parameter is incorrect."
what on earth is that? boy this dvd isn't worth all the problems!!!
it had less than 3 min to go... now DVD shrink is closing itself down.
i'm trying again... so many errors. so much frustration. :)
you are such angels for helping me out!!!
