Hi there all! I'm a new PS3 User, Just bought my unit 2 days ago, however I do not have an HdTV as of no. Would it be possible to play NBA 2K9 without HdTV? 'd appreciate any advice, thanks! :)
I did not think that PS3 games will have this kind of requirements.

I'm not sure, but I believe your PS3 will automatically figure your TV's best video output. If you're using regular component cables (red/white/yellow) or some other SD connection, you should still be able to play games regularly.
...don't take my word for it, though.

yeah, you don't need a hdtv to play the ps3. So you can still play it in standard def.

if for some reason you are having initial video display issued. Just when you power on the ps3, keep your finger holding down the power button for about 5 seconds after it starts, and it will reset all the video settings.

Actually yellow/red/white is composite.

Component is red/blue/green for video with red/white for audio additionally

Probably just a typo KajNrig but I just wanted to make it clear so as to not confuse readers.

They should all work just fine (going off of hearsay). The only thing you need to make sure of is if they're HDMI 1.3 or not.
And yes, any HD game looks better when it's actually in HD.

Unless you need 10m or more the cheap cables do just as well as the expensive ones. It's only when you need a long cable that you want to be buying the expensive ones.
Yeah I bought my cable from ebay, best to buy from a power seller with lots of feedback, best way to make sure you are actually buying a v1.3 cable rather than the person claiming it to be, as the packaging wont tell you. And yes the picture quality will look much better!
To make sure its a 1.3 cable just play a dvd then press Select i think, this'll bring up that screen with how far in the movie you are in on the bottom right and lots of little info along the top. If the figure on the top right is greater than 5Gb/s-10GB/s then you have a 1.3 cable, if its always at less than 4.5GB/s you have something lower.

Avoid Ebay. Go to monoprice.com and get a 1.3 HDMI for like 5 or 6 bucks

PS3 without HD? I don't understand. Does not compute? <banging head>
bigo is right about the 10m thing. Go cheap.
Has anyone tried using equipment on either end of the run? I am told there are some media extenders out there that will utilize CAT5e or RG6 and perform a virtually lossless transport. I always liked Component because of the low-loss factor, but now with the equipment moving to HDMI, we are forced to change. Just wondering.

I have a PS3 and I play it on SDTV since I have no other choice.
Believe me when I tell you some PS3 games look fugly on SDTVs.
A good example is Lair and NBA 2k9 NBA live 09.
I have 2k9 for PS3 and it looks absolutely horrible on a SDTV. I have tried all SD display configurations with no luck.
My bro has the same game for Xbox360 and it looks fine on the same TV im talking about.
The with 2k9 on the PS3 is that it is too sharp, if you look at the borthers of the players and other things theyre not smooth, they are sawteeth like. I dont know why this happens though, if any one knows how to fix it please explain Im sure the original poster will be grateful also.
Even though they look pretty bad, theyre only a handfull of games, most of them look great on SDTVs (i.e Metal Gear, COD4,Devil May Cry4, etc etc). If you have the money, buy yourself an HDTV since the PS3 is made for High Def. If not then youll do fine with most games.

Go to Settings -> Display Settings -> and check if Cross-Color Reduction filter is on, turning it on if it isn't. It makes a world of difference on SDTV's. I believe the 360 has this on by default, with no way of changing it, but I don't have a 360 so I'm just guessing.

I honestly hadn't tried that. It didnt work on that particular game (NBA2k9) but Ill have to check if I see a difference in other games.
Thanks for the tip
