Hey, I was wondering since I'm about to purchase a slimline Playstation 2 console what would be the best method of backing up games? I have heard that playing backups with Swap Magic can damage you're ps2's lens/laser. I have also heard that playing through a HDD puts no strain on the laser.
So which method is best to use? Including factors like ease of use, price and compatibility with games. Also, which program should I use to burn games onto disks, and what speeds should I burn the disks? The disks that I have are in the next paragraph.
I have a pack of 25 Verbatim DVD+R 16x disks, and was wondering if these disks would work fine for backups and are good quality, so it won't damage my lens/laser faster?
I also want to know if my burner can handle these disks and if it can use better types of media for backing up games and movies from my PC and playing them. Here are my burners specs:
16X DVD(+/-)R/RW (+/-)R DL drive
Must use Double-Layer media discs in order to take advantage of the DL technology
Function Maximum speed
DVD-R DL Write Once Up to 4X
DVD+R DL Write Once Up to 2.4X
DVD+R Write Once Up to 16X
DVD+RW Rewritable Up to 4X
DVD-R Write Once Up to 8X
DVD-RW Rewritable Up to 4X
DVD ROM Read Up to 16X
CD-R Write Once Up to 40X
CD-RW Rewritable Up to 24X
CD-ROM Read Up to 40X
Thanks in advance for any help, I really appreciate it!

It won't put any more strain on your laser than playing regular games. Just use good media.

You can only use an IDE hdd on a V12-V13 slim. Otherwise you would need an external USB drive
The compatibility is not the greatest on a USB drive.
You can read through my posts on this thread for some help with playing games on a USB drive

I use Sony DVD-R on the PS2 slim and they work great. Verbatim is very good also.
For DVD+R, just set your BOOKTYPE in your burning program such as Imgburn to DVD-ROM
For Dual Layer backups, use only Verbatim DL DVD+R and burn at 2.4x and you should never have a probem
If I were you I would either get the Swap Magic and then use it to install fmcb 1.7 and use ESR to play backups.
http://bootleg.sksapps.com/tutorials/fmcb/
Or you can have someone install fmcb 1.7 for you.
Just check out the freevast forum at psx-scene.com
Lots of info there on fmcb and ESR. Just read the announcement and the stickys
Hope that helps you some. Also there are many great guides here in the sticky section or just do a forum search.

If you purchase Swap Magic and a fliptop or Swap Tools Pro V3, you can just play backups that way if you want.
FMCB 1.7 and ESR r9b.ELF installed to your mc, is like the memor32 card if you have heard of it.
It allows you to just directly boot a backup without swapping discs once installed.
The only thing is the ISO that you made from your Original Disks, has to be patched with ESR Disc patcher, then you burn it with imgburn at 4x or higher speed.
Like I say just do a little reading on it. Check the tutorial link I gave above and check the freevast forum.
Here is a thread started back in May about it. So just glance through the pages to see.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/665761
You can have these applications such as uLaunch.elf, codebreaker, SMS media player etc all start right from your PS2 browser.

your welcome diablo12
Well there are lots of newer users that say they burn at 8x or higher using 16x disks.
I personally still burn all my games at 4x with imgburn and never had an issue.

Thank you very much. :) You have cleared up all my issues with this and I will be buying a slimline PS2 with Swap Magic. Just one last question though, I will need to buy Swap Magic to be able to use FMCB 1.7, right?

Yes you need it to install FMCB 1.7 or your other option would be to have one of the guys like Dangwoot on psx-scene forums install it for you on a mc.
They only charge the postage to and back with your mc in a bubble envelope.
Now if you are buying a new slimline, a note is that the very newest model SCPH-90001 , fmcb 1.7 will not work on all of them.
It seems that Sony changed the bios in some of the latest releases and fmcb will not work.
The guys on the freevast forum are looking into it. If you go there you will see a thread about it.

At one time. It is way cheaper now, so it is not a good deal.

Hey, I need some help again. I purchased the PAL Swap Magic 3.6 disks and the Magic Switch V4 that you recommended Smokeyrain. I also got Magic Keys 2. Could you or anyone else give me good tutorial on how to install these devices. I ould prefer a tutorial on the Magic Switch V4. By the way, are oth just as good or is one better than the other (Magic Keys 2, Magic Switch V4).
P.S I have a PS2 Slim model 7000X,
Thanks in advance!

Am I supposes to take those white sticks and the see-through stickers off under every piece?
EDIT: I'm trying to install tool E, it looks like I;ve done it right, but when I close the PS2 lid it feels like its straining and its gonna break. Is this right? And I'm having trouble with Tool A and which tool it exactly is? Theres two pieces which I think might be able to fit but I can't seem to get any of them in.

Yes there is glue under the white stickers, once you have it in place it will stay stuck down.
The lid should close easy if place properly.
FOR INSTALLATION OF TOOL E:
Put a disc into the console, push the ON/RESET button and insert Tool E. Release the ON/RESET button, if Tool C is installed correctly, the disc automatically rotates. Adjust the position a little bit to left or right if the disc doesn?t rotate.
Pic 1
Pic 2
This is the best picture I have of the Swap tool v4
So for your model you would use "F" as your TOOL A
And again depending upon your model you would use "C" or "E" near the hinge.

Ahh... I took the glue off of Tool E... the big chunk anyway, there's still a layer of glue. Just not as big. Ie this okay? And thanks for pointing me out to Tool A, I didn;t know you had to use a screwdriver.
EDIT: I cant fit Tool F in. It jumps back out whenever I try to put it in the hole above the power/reset switch.
