I was just wandering has any used shrink to make a movie smaller say 80% quality 6.5 gig to 4.4gig. And played their dvd-r on a upconverting dvd player? What does the quality look like? Does a movie used with shrink degrade the high def upconversion? thanks
You will get different answers to that question. I have seen the difference and ended throwing some in the trash and redoing my backups with DVD Rebuilder which is far more superior.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Indeed. My main dvd player upconverts to 1080i as the main tv (32") tops out at 1080i, and DVD Rebuilder produces far superior results. I still watch old Shrink-created movies on the same equipment and the difference between the 2 programs is apparent. As long as Shrink isn't being asked to transcode too much it still produces good enough quality, but it's not a patch on Rebuilder.
edit- Oops - just notoced that i hadn't mentioned which encoder i use with Rebuilder- it's the awesome (and free) HC Encoder 0.23, which is multi-core capable so runs nicely and quicly enough on my Quad Core Q6600.

yes DVD Rebuilder is what you want to use, also the playback quality depends on what set your watching the backup on, a 32" CRT(you won't notice a quality loss) compared to a 60" Sony(you will notice a quality loss) at 80% so there are alot of variables
