DVD Shrink hangs when opened on Vista 32 Ultimate

I recently built a new system running Vista Ultimate 32-bit on a Quad-Core Intel.

I used DVD Shrink once to compress a DVD already ripped to my hard drive and I was impressed by the speed on the new system. I had maximized the DVD Shrink window on a 1600x1200 display and made the video preview area rather large. Everything seemed to work fine. I closed DVD Shrink when done.

When I try to start DVD Shrink again it comes up in the standard size window but the area that usually displays the DVD content (above the video preview area) is very small... so small that I can hardly see the tab headers... and the bit of text that I can see apears to be flickering... like it's continually redrawing. The app is stuck. At this point I cannot do anything other than use Task Manager to close DVD Shrink.

I've un-installed and re-installed. I've searched the registry in case it's saving window sizes... I don't see anything. Tried different screen resolutions... hasn't made a difference.

Any suggestions are appreciated! It's bumming me out because the one time I used it (on the new machine) was great and fast! Help!?!? TIA.

You wouldn't happen to be using Internet Explorer 8 would you?

Hmm... good question. I don't use IE... so I'm uncertain which version is on the machine. Whatever it shipped with. I thought it was 7.x but I will have to double check it to make sure.

No... IE8 is not installed... IE7 is. I did have Nero Essentials 8 installed but I've just removed that. Still no help to DVD Shrink.

Uninstall DVD Shrink, run Ccleaner (cleanup and registry), reboot and reinstall DVD Shrink...see if the problem is corrected.

Have you tried resizing the preview box using your mouse?

dialysis1: :-/ if it were only that simple! I cannot resize the preview box or anything else because the app is hung. It doesn't respond to anything... other than being killed by Task Manager.

LOCOENG: I tried CCleaner and a full reinstall last night but it didn't seem to help. After seeing your suggestion I've tried it again, but this time I reinstalled the DVD Shrink app to a new location and it seems to have resolved the problem! So here's what I did:

1. Run CCleaner and used it to uninstall DVD Shrink
2. Used CCleaner to do a regular cleanup
3. Used CCleaner to do a Registry cleanup
4. Full Reboot of System
5. Reinstalled DVD Shrink to a new location

I've just finished compressing a DVD now and the app re-starts no problem!

Glad you got it sorted although I'm puzzled as to why it wouldn't install to the default location, but would elsewhere. I would have thought Ccleaner would have cleaned any hooks that might have been preventing proper operation/installation that wasn't possible before.

Actually my initial install was not to the default location but to a directory I specified E:\video\DVD Shrink. When I ran CCleaner and did the last reinstall I just thought I'd let it go ahead and install to the default C:\Program Files\DVD Shrink.

At this point I'm not sure if it was the last CCleaner run or the reinstall to a new folder (or both) that made the difference. I'm just glad to have DVD Shrink back working! :-)
