I've been scouring the internet about softmodding a version 90001 because i'm planning on getting a pstwo (planning on getting a buncha games from my friends who moved onto 360/PS3, and most importantly i want to play King of Colloseum 2 (jpn only)), and i'm assuming that 90001 is the version that is being sold currently (in the US). However, i ran into posts about how FMCB and certain other loaders won't work on specific versions of 90001 and i also ran into unsuccessful stories of a few people with version 90001 using swap magic.
However, I found this video on youtube just recently.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KiuYNtyriOw
The person who loaded it states that (i used babelfish btw) if you have a 79001a or 90001 then ALL you need to do is block "sensor A" and nothing more (and use swap magic of course).
I remember reading posts about people who couldn't FIND sensor C on their 90001. i'm wondering .. maybe Sony just took it out to save money; after all, the implementation of the internal power source was to save a buck or two as well. Or maybe, this only works on certain 90001's.
Does anybody have experience with using swap magic on a 90001. Is 'sensor A' really the only sensor that needs be blocked?

Oh and one more thing. (sorry couldn't find an edit post function, only an edit thread title)
The video poster seems to push in the wire to the SIDE (inward) into 'sensor A'
Otoh in the magic tools (i think they were called) the lil thing you stick into 'sensor A' is completely vertical. also the tissue wad method probably doesn't reach inside enough? (just something to think about... (sorry for any ignorance on my part, i've never modded a thing in my life; just basing all this on the days of reading and digesting info on this subject))

I have scph-90001 and swap magic v3.6 works perfectly. And yes,you only need to block sensor A and you can just close the tray when swapping. This is the method i use and i have no problem with it.

Hey, I'm having a little trouble. My Swap Magic 3.6 disk won't read on my 90001 SS ps2. It was working a day or two ago, but now it just won't read it at all. Does anyone know what the problem is?

i think you're having the same problem that i had.I'm assuming the DVD one doesn't work right? If so,then putting on the swap magic dvd version make sure that press it all the way and hear a click. You know there are 3 springers thingy, they have to be on top of the disk.

Ok, I'm a complete idiot. I was using the CD instead of the DVD for the ps2. I have fully proven that Swap Magic works with the SCPH 90001 Playstation. All that is needed is tool A and none of the other ones. Covering the sensor above the reset button, along with using the Swap Magic DVD is the only requirement to play all imports. Thanks for everyone's help. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone =]

The same problems seem to be happening on multiple ps2. Even when I verify the 3 clips are on top of the disk it doesn't work every time. At best the disk works 1 out of 50 times. Model I have is the slim 90001. System is only a month old. The only time it ever read the disk twice in a row was after the disk was carefully cleaned with water/soft cloth. If the disks are so picky and hard to use it would be easier to use a mod chip if you know how to solder.

make sure the disk you're using says DVD and not CD. honostly, the ps2 90001 is the best model to play imports using swap magic. Simplest way to do it. like i said before, all you need to do is make sure the sensor above the reset button is down.

Yes I am sure the dvd disk is being used. Not sure what is making it work/not work. I used a flashlight to check the 3 springs - they are on top of the disk. The only sensor that was blocked was the 'A' one. CD disk works every time. There is some bubbles on the disk that you can see. So many people reporting problems kind of points to the quality of the disks being used wouldn't you think?

If your SM CD works but your DVD disk doesn't then contact your reseller and exchange it.
It has happened many a time, and for most that fixes the problem when they get the new disk.

If I am lucky enough to get the disk to boot is there something that can be done for the 90001 date code 8c model to boot from the MC? I would like to just add a hdd to it and run games from it instead of the disk.

You can use your Swap Magic CD also to install fmcb 1.8
Download the noobie package to install fmcb
Then download your DVDELF.bin file that you will place inside the "INJECT" folder. Don't worry it explains there.
You will also want USBAdvance.elf if you want to play games from usb drive.
Tutorials here for later on how to play games using USBAdvance.
Just read through my posts for links.
All you basically need to learn is to format your USB as FAT32, use the USBExtreme Utility to transfer games, use USBinsane to transfer ISO images to your USB drive.
Ok and now for your tutorial using Swap Magic to install fmcb 1.8

Unfortunately the model of PS2 that I have is the 90001 date code 8c which has the v2.30 bios. From reading other posts "Sony have let the function that make osd update, but simply disabled its call."
FMCB will never boot on these models, sorry

There are some with Date code 8c that it does work on.
It was posted at psxscene forums. Just not all of them. They probably made the revision part way through.

Thank you for your help smokyrain. fmcb is not working on mine unfortunately. If I do go with a mod chip I would be able to play off a hdd? Would you be able to recommend a good one? Either that or buy a used ps2 for $60.

Yes if you went with a modchip you could play off the usb hdd.
I really don't know which modchip to go with.
These guys could probably help best with that newest model
You can also just buy the USBExtreme disc and then you can play off hdd. But you can't play backups on disc with it.
Or you could buy another slim ps2. It is up too you, that way you could install fmcb 1.8 using swap magic.

Did you get the magic swap dvd to work or did you put in the mod chip? Wouldn't the mod chip damage the laser in the future? I got my ps2 last night, schp 90001 and I'm trying the swap magic 3.6 and it is not going to the load program menu. My brother has an older version ps2 which he bought 2 months ago and his works fine with the swap, only thing is that he has to make sure the spindles are fixed properly.
Could you advise me as to what to do?

Yes it will work with your 90001
You will only need to block the sensor by the reset button.
