Ok...having NAT problems with my downloads for ages now. Im using Bitdefender internet security 2008 and Azureus P2P software.
Ive done the port forwarding, changed numerous ports, added rule for Azureus etc but my downloads are still slow. ive tried everything really.
Ive read that this problem is common with Bitdefender and it seems to be a fault within the Bitdefender package.
My subscription for Bitdefender is up in a few days and i was thinking of changing Security packages.
I know this is more to do with Internet Security than P2P but i couldnt find anywhere else suitable for this thread.
Obviously i want to use a good security package...one doesnt tax my system (which is whay i went with Bitdefender).
What Internet Security are you using and what are your thoughts on it overall, as well as with Azureus?
thanks.

You'll get an opinion on every AV and suite out there. Personally, I'd say have a look at Avira (very light) with just your router and Window's firewall or a freebie like Commodo or Online Armor or Sunbelt, good info over here: http://www.wilderssecurity.com/ scroll down to Security Software. Never used a commercial frirewall here. Even the free version of Avira is better than some paid AV's, too bad about BD and p2p, hadn't heard that, they've been pretty buggy the last couple of year's. Azureus is a top notch client I switched to after utorrent started giving me trouble but the memory usage is insane. I thought Opera was bad at 40,000 K but Azureus run's at 130,000 K while utorrent use's 10,000 K. Whatever happened with utorrent seem's to have cleared up but I still like Azureus and while thing's run fine, the memory usage is just too high.

Just an update and probably nothing but using PeerGuardian rather than the built in ip blocker in Azureus (Vuze) has memory usage at 60,000 K, still high but liveable. Can't see it making that much difference but who know's.

Thanks mistycat for your input there.
I might go back to McAfee or trend Micro. Ive used them last yr without any problems with Azureus. I DID find though that Azureus uses up a lot of memory but it doesnt really affect me too much cause i have 3GB of RAM.( I use PG2 as well).

UPDATE:
Ok ive disabled my firewall and tried the NAT test in Azureus and it keeps coming up with a NAT error no matter what port i try including the default 6881.
I'm using the standard Aolynk router that came with the broadband package. Could it be the settings in this ?

If there is a firewall in that router, it need's to be port forwarded. Not familiar with it myself (is that an A-Link) but try connecting directly to the modem to see and use a port higher than 10,000 for this. Is your ISP here: http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Bad_ISPs or what is it, many more are blocking torrent's? Could be you need a static ip or UPnP disabled. Is the address at Command Prompt the one you forwarded to? Could be a firewall in your modem, some need forwarding too.

Ok..ive port-forwarded my router. fecked up my internet connection while doing it and had to contact my ISP to retrieve my username/password on my account.
Still, when i test Azureus I get a NAT error. Ive my firewall turned off. I'm using port 50500.
WTF ?

UPDATE:
So, at this stage, ive figured out my NAT error is NOT down to my AV package so I updated the Title.
Ive installed the latest version of Azureus (Vuze) cause i was getting loads of plugin errors with the older version i had. I re-configured my connections settings and tried the NAT/Firewall test again and failed.
I have no firewall turned on !!
Here is the error message im getting:
"testing port 50500
Nat Error, connect attempt to 84.203.43.xxx (your computer)timed out after 20seconds.This means your port is probably closed."
I have done the port-forwarding on my router (i followed on-screen instructions from portforward.com), i have set up a static IP on my PC. I cant undestand how its trying to connect to my old IP address above ??
This is wrecking my head...my downloads have stopped completely now.
Aaarrgghhh !

OK fixed it !!
Changed my WAn settings in my router to my new Static IP.
Also, disabled my router firewall and deleted the port filter. (think this might have sorted it)

Not sure I understand but it is your router firewall you are opening a port in (port Forwarding) and you shouldn't have to disable it if it's correct. But good enough, it's working and BD is on the job.

Im not sure i understand myself mistycat. My NAT error is gone anyhow.
Just to check, i went back into the router settings and enabled the firewall and the NAT error came back. I did the port-forwarding as per the on-screen instructions for my router in portforward.com.
