OK so I've had my 60Gb since launch and haven't had a single problem with it, apart from the odd crash when playing fallout 3.
Over the past 2 months or so the fan has started to get really loud.
About 15-20 minutes into a game the fan will kick in to (I think) its highest level, I no its a good thing and its getting the heat out but even after exiting the game and leaving it on the xmb for a few minutes it wont go down until I switch it off.
For a comparable noise level its about as loud as my pc is. I'm pretty sure this isn't normal so I just want to know from any 60Gb owners how loud your fan is or if it still runs quietly?
I've only had mine a few months, but it's a refurbished model (...right? Anyway.) that's been in use for a while now. That said, it's still eerily quiet.
If you want, you could try replacing the fan(s, if there're more than one) and seeing if that helps.
Mine does the same thing and has for a while. I vacuumed the vents and it helped. The fan is not running at max. Do the fan test and you will see what max really is.

I heard something about there being different fan variations, the amount of blades each fan has, not sure if that's relevant to the 60gb model though.

I thought the fan test could only be done on the 40gb? I heard that it does more damage then good aswell. i'll try clean the vents with a hand held vacuum, see if that helps.
When i was using my PS3 in a smaller room it got quite hot and was very noisy,i changed rooms and its fine now, just make sure its well ventilated and that your not playing it for hours and hours, that said i do think that with higher spec games that the PS3 will have to work harder and be noisier.
Also the fan test was for the 40GB PS3 and the 40GB only,it will casue damage to any other system,so only try it on your 60GB if your crazy or hate your PS3.
Yeah I know all about good ventilation and it has that.
I tried clearing the dust out with a vacuum and it has been quieter for longer, about 40 odd minutes but it still happens after that.
as long as it doesn't break I can live with it. although many people with BD drive errors on 60gb consoles have been getting replacements for free after the warranty has ended.
dude, the same thing happpens to my computer, but dont worry i figured a solution, U should open your ps3 and clean the duust out carefully.
Use a ir drier and make sure the fan blades are clean. Whenever u play make sure you dont leave the ps3 next to a wall or something cause thats what causes dust a cumulation. I am 100% sure that that is the reason.
i got my 60gb since launch and its been mint. noise level hasn't changed a bit. everything is flawless actually. my only complaint is NFS Undercover is very glitchy but its not my ps3's fault because my friend's 40gb does the exact same thing.
