I have an MPEG2 file with a lecture on it, and tried to burn a DVD.
Unfortunately, the file is too big. Got online and read that DVD Shrink will work to shrink the file to something I can burn to DVD.
However, how do I get this MPEG2 file converted to something DVD Shrink can work with??
I'm not too savvy with all the different formats out there, some of the reading I've done just makes me sleepy, with all the file conversion, and swapping here and there.
Is there a simple way to get this file small enough to fit on a DVD?
note: I am not trying to rip a movie or steal anything, this is a public video from google, but its 3 hrs long... AVC will convert the file to MPEG or NTSC, but DVD Shrink won't read it.
What can I do here?

Use nero burn to convert the file to a .vob (dvd file)
If the file is too big for a single dvd, nero will warn you and ask if you want to shrink the file to fit on a single dvd.
Answer yes and then burn the file.
NTSC is a north american standard for dvds.
PAL is european standard for dvds.

Thx for responding. Is there no other way but Nero? I have been avoiding Nero, 'cuz it came with my new computer(2 mths old) but now wants me to buy it in order to use it.
I'm angry at this 'cuz I paid good money for the DVD burner, that comes with ?no burning software? This is like buying a car only to find out there is no motor!!!
I have windows dvd maker and also power2go, and I own DVD cloner, as well as Anyvideoconverter.
All of these are supposed to do what I want, but they seem to all use different formats.
Do I really have to just suck it up and buy Nero???

Imgburn is free and very good quality if all you need is burning software.

There are a few free programs that will do the same.
But I find they don't seem to work as well as the ones you pay for.
Search google for some free programs and give them a try.

Thanks again for your replies, I appreciate the help. I own AnyDVDCloner, as well as AnyVideoConverter, and have DVD Shrink.

My question is how do I convert to a file that DVD Shrink will recognize?
I'm sure there are programs like nero that do this all in one, but these files are originally Google video files, so I downloaded them into Real Player, and converted them to DVD files.
Problem is DVD Shrink can't read these filetypes.

Is there not some way to do this, short of buying yet another program??

Hi,

dvd shrink recognizes mpeg 2, but not mpeg 1. So if your file is mpeg 2, then you should have no problem. I think your file is not mpeg 2 and that is why you are having problems.

Sorry about that, hit the wrong button and just quoted you with no reply.
Anyway, I checked and it is an MPEG2 file for sure.
I can also convert to AVI, but DVD shrink won't read this either.

I really am having some grief here, only because of the file size. Most videos I download from google are small enough to just convert and burn, but not this one.

I was hoping that on this forum for DVD Shrink, someone would have a way to help me do this.
Really hoping not to have to buy another burning software, as I now have three, Power2Go, WindowsDVDMaker, and ANYVideoConverter.
AnyDVDCloner also does burning, but none of these will shrink a file.
Am I just missing something here??

Well, I thank you all for your help. I downloaded DVD Flick, and created a new file, and it burned just fine with IMGBurn. I'm not sure how, I guess they are connected, 'cuz I didn't download IMGburn, but anyway, it worked!
Somehow, it ended up copying it twice on one DVD...thats 6 hrs on one DVD!
Again, thank you, but I still did not get an answer to my original question, which was can I convert to a file that DVD shrink will recognize?
But I guess now I don't care...

Someone should have asked what your file structure looked like. The source files are either DVD compliant or not. If not, then they have to be converted to a compliant form. Assuming you have DVD compliant MPEG2, there should be a VIDEO_TS folder that contains IFO, BUP, and VOB files (the DVD video files). Occasionally you can have another format, other than DVD in MPEG2. You can read about it in the Glossary to get an idea. If you have IFO, BUP, and VOB files and no VIDEO_TS folder, create the folder and put the files in it. Then, when you open Shrink, click Open Files and navigate (Browse) to where you have the VIDEO_TS and select it. Shrink will then either analyze the files in the VIDEO_TS folder or give you an error reading, meaning for some reason the files aren't DVD compliant. If you get an error, try running the files through FixVTS. It only takes a few minutes for that step. That's about all there is to DVD Shrink and MPEG2 files.

When I need to convert AVI to DVD video and fit to DVD5 I use ConvertXtoDVD or Nero Vision. But, you said you were already in DVD format, or rather MPEG2.
