Just got myself a PAL 80gb and in the instructions it says I can play PS1 games but not PS2 games. Just done a quick search on here and found people are playing PS2 games. So do I need to dl any software or are the instructions lying and I can play PS2 games?

What you have to remember is that all the new 80GB PS3s are really the 40GB ones with a 80GB hdd. And as you know the 40GB ones cannot play PS2 games. The only 80GB PS3s that can play PS2 games are the old ones.

Sony can release a new firmeare update which contains the software to emulate a PS2 so you can play the games, but as of yet they have not done so. So it's a waiting game to see if they finally do this or we just have to carry on using our PS2s.

But then because the PS3 will be software emulation it wont be as good, so I believe quite a few people prefer to carry on using their PS2s.

the PS3's w/ PS2 BWC are:

[NTSC]20GB (Model #s CECHBxx) No Wifi, No Card Readers, Hardware PS2 Emulation, 4 USB Ports, SACD support

[NTSC]60GB (Model #s CECHAxx) Wifi, Card Readers, Hardware PS2 Emulation, 4 USB Ports, SACD support

[PAL]60GB (Model #s CECHCxx) Wifi, Card Readers, Software PS2 Emulation, 4 USB Ports, SACD support

[NTSC]80GB (Model #s CECHExx) Wifi, Card Readers, Software PS2 Emulation, 4 USB Ports, SACD support

all other model #s are not reported to have PS2 BWC.

those model #s are no longer in production, though you may still be able to find them somewhere....used or maybe a very unsuccessful retailer.
