Hi there guys and gals. I know this is probably a really dumb question with an easy answer so forgive my stupidity!! I tried to back up my copy of underworld (its not that bad if you ignore the first 30 minutes!!) onto DVD+RW but its not happening. DVD Decrypter says that the main movie file is over 5 gb, whereas DVD SHrink says its only 4.3 gb (therefore small enough to fit on the disk) however when i tried to copy it using dvd shrink it said there was an I/O devise error copy protection error blah, blah, blah! Therefore i gave up trying to copy straight from the DVD and decided to just copy the DVD files onto my hard drive and come back to it later. Now when i open DVD shrink and try to open the folder it says "dvd shrink encountered an error and cannot continue. failed to open file C:/underworld/video_TS.IFO" the system cannot find the file specified. THe file is blatantly there in that folder!!!! I know this is a very long thread but i would appreciate and help, i'm thinking about ditching the whole idea of backing up my movies its so much hassle!!! If someone could just come up with a solution for me that would be grewat! By the way its dvd shrink 3.1.6. thanks

The size difference between Decrypter and Shrink is due to the fact that Decrypter shows the actual size of the disc and Shrink, by default, will show the movie as 4.4GB and the corresponding amount of compression used to achieve the 4.4 GB size.

Don't give up yet. An I/O device error means there is something wrong with the settings on your drive. My first suggestion would be to update your ASPI layer if you haven't already. A bad or missing ASPI is the cause of many drive problems. Here's a link to get you started:

http://cd-rw.org/articles/archive/aspisetup.cfm

Another thing you need to check is that DMA is enabled for your drive. To do this go to device manager>IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, right click on the channel/channels that your reader and burner are on then,

Select PROPERTIES from the pop-up menu,
Select the ADVANCED SETTINGS tab.
Set the "Transfer Mode" to "DMA if available" for your reader and burner.

Let us know if this helps.

Okie, Dokie there evil - I can lend you hand, if in fact you are really a "Dyed in the wool" top level evil -
In other words - I?ll be glad to help if you?re not a dwizzle, evil, wanna bee. I can?t be bothered with a wooosie - wimpie evil, I want the "Real Deal, evil weevil" -
Well, OK and Alrighty then -
Some pre-work, to set-the-stage, so to speak -
FIRST, I want you to check your PC - if you have Easy CD Creator on board - Uninstall it - and Now

Next, there were some "Bugs" in DVD Shrink 3.1.6 Soooooooo, we're going to trash that "Bad Boy" -
We now want the up-to-date one and it?s version 3.1.7 beta 4.
Let's send Ya here - ->
Shrink download - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_shrink.cfm
(and since I'm such a nice guy and you're not (Ya better not be or I'm goinna have to take all this back - Here's a guide for later - you won't need it tonight)
Shrink Guide -
http://www.chrismccann.co.uk/dvd_shrink_3.htm

Now you'll need to load this Nero program up and install it - DVD Shrink will need it :P
A 30-day, free, fully functional Nero 6 download can be had here:
Nero.com/us/631939541422774.php" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://www.Nero.com/us/631939541422774.php
(I've been thinking, for all this you had better be an evil, evil of a serious nature !)

Here are your directions for tonight :D

Before I start, I create a folder on my Desktop (i.e. All DVD Work) in that, I create a sub-folder with my movie?s name on it (i.e. All DVD Work/Pirates of the Caribbean) that?s where I put my work, where I can always find it later.

When using DVDShrink, after inserting your DVD, open Shrink, click ?Open Disk?. Then, ?Select DVD Drive? and click ?OK?. After Shrink has opened your disc, anywhere from 30 seconds to 1-½ minutes you?ll see the size of the disc at the bar at the top of the page. If you have a Green bar with a little Gray at the top of the page, go to the next paragraph:-) If you see some ?Red?, simply check off those files you don?t want, I.E. Outer Mongolian or Eastern Himalayan Yak language, Director?s commentary or extra audio files ? I keep ACS 2ch or ACS 5.1, that will give you stereo, most of the rest you can trash. Only do that if you need to lose some stuff to make it fit. You can also gain more room by clicking ?Custom Ratio? and increasing the compression.

Personally, I compress until I see about 1/8 of an inch of Gray at the end of my Green bar - that way I?m not writing to the very edge of my DVD disc. - Remember, more compression, a tiny bit less on the picture quality ? when I say ?less quality? I?m speaking of theoretically less, nothing you can really see with the naked eye for the most part.

With that being done, let?s make sure that the box which says ?Full Disk? is depressed (No need to cheer it up, it likes being depressed :-). When you are ready to go, - -> click ?Backup?. When the Backup box opens, under ?Target Device? make sure your DVD Burner is listed in the window. Under ?Target folder?, make sure the folder you made at the beginning with the movie?s name is there (that way you can always go back and burn another copy in the future). Now click ?OK?.
Last step: ?STEP AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER !? Clear your throat and yell, ?Burn Baby Burn ! ? ?Let me hear you say it, Who?s your Daddy Now ???? Do not fold, spindle, mutilate, molest nor fondle the keyboard. ?GO AWAY !? Ms. Computer will let you know when she is finished, to approach her before then may be a hazardous to your health -

That should do it - 1 complete backup :-)

And Bye the way, Welcome to the Club :P

If ya hit a snag, let me know exactly where and what it was -

See ya, Pete
