DivX 3!!!! :(
Why do they bother???
I would rather they would put their focus on MKW files.

I can't agree with you more. I would rather see MKV container support over DivX 3 anyday (afterall, the PS3 supports all the major codecs H.264, DivX, MP3, AAC, AC3, ect). But adding DivX 3 will help support more of the various types of DivX\XVID files.

I don't see a issue with this update. As long as it's not something I need to kick extra cash out for. I'm happy :)

Agreed w/ the divx 3 vs mkv bit. I'm curious where they got the feedback that divx 3 would be a 'hotter' feature to add over mkv, if that was their reasoning.
I'm guessing divx 3 was just an easier give than mkv, so that's what they went for.

I guess an update is always good and that features is pretty cool from what I read. I wish you could created different folders under the movie section. I have Friends seasons 1-10 on there and have to scroll through quite a long list to get to an episode I want to watch.

Latest PS3 firmware update hits consoles.......
as opposed to the firmware update hitting PC's (or mac-- which despite the Mac crowd IS a Personal Computer even though for some it's more like a religious articfact) lol
Sorry, just saw the title, expected it to be "hits" as in a negative like hitting/subtracting etc not a literary reduncy.
But after adjusting my expectations for content--- good article.

I'm just happy they are still improving. Let's face it. The PS3 came out as a gaming system +. Sony has made great improvements with all the firmware upgrades since launch. It is now a formidable media center, excellent bd player with bd live and what it can do with audio, and still an excellent evolving gaming system. Good things will continue to come.
BTW, My family Wii that we got for Christmas hasn't been touched in two weeks. :(

You can already do this. Just select triangle, go to information, and then enter something like "Friends Season 1" under "Album". Unfortunately you'd have to do this for every episode, but when you're done, you can just sort by hitting square and it will create folders that are sorted by your Album title. I've done this for my videos and my games and it makes things much easier.
Good to see Sony is upgrading the media side of the PS3. I know there are a lot of things I'd like to see added or improved on the gaming side, but that's not expected for a small update like 2.60, most likely big things will come in 3.0...whenever that will be.

They add a photo gallery that half the people won't use instead of in-game music which would be loved.

I thought they couldn't add in-game music due to MS patents. The way around it was to have game developers program that functionality in each game if they so choose. I could be wrong though.
I could see myself using this. My parents and in-laws come over from time to time for dinner. Would be nice to sit in the living room and scroll through pictures of the kids and stuff on our TV. Although I can already do a basic slideshow on my modded XBOX, I will eventually be disconnecting and retiring that beast.
Cheers Sony! It won't be totally wasted on me. Anything free is a welcome addition :P

Lol. Psst! Don't give 'em any ideas! Not that they'd know what to do with 'em. :)

No, you are absolutely correct and well informed.

I already use my PS3 for viewing photos on my big tv so this is a welcome addition - free software is better than paying over $ 200 for a large screen photo frame

One thing to be aware of with this firmware update is that it will rebuild your hard drive's database. I lost all album art and album name changes associated with my music collection and album names associated with my photo collection. Bit of a pain considering the 300+ music albums and 500+ photos i had on the system, all carefully categorized! An afternoon spent redoing it today instead of playing Fallout 3.
Still, its always good to see Sony incorporating more functionality into the system.

Well to many the latest FW updates have also wiped out the BD-5, BD-9 capabilities (although where there's a will there's a way). I major step back, and typical of Sony's constantly crippling any kind of unofficial playback. I doubt any MKV playback will ever appear, as it's obvious that this is the container of choice for the quickly appearing x264 BD rips.

I'd love to see mkv support as well. That would help me to stop having to use mkv2vob just to watch HD content on my HDTV through my PS3.

The update didn't wipe out my album art. Everything works great. Nice program. Just wish the I could play a different tune besides the muzak. The actual slideshow lets you choose your own music, but you only have the option to turn off the cheesy muzak when you're in the menu. Oh well. Still a nice program.
