I know there was a thread for Bangkok Dangerous a while back but my issue did not appear to be addressed there. I use AnyDVD running behind Shrink and have had virtually no problems. Occasionally I have had to use Ripit4me and if AnyDVD won?t do it, Ripit usually does.
Anyway, the first problem. I have Shrink set at Target size 4300 and recently I have had about three movies that Shrink has said something like ?target size will be bigger than 4300 and may not fit on the disc, would you like to continue?? This throws me off because I thought that if I set a custom target size, Shrink would compress the movie to that size no matter what.
I have just continued with the rip and indeed, the movie is too big for a standard disc so I have just burned it to a dual layer disc. So that is what happened to Bangkok Dangerous. So I burned it to a Dual layer disc but when I try to play the movie, it only plays the 8 or 10 previews. Then it stops at the opening page with Play The Movie, Setup, Extras, etc. But if I click on Play The Movie, it just does those two bang bang jumpy things then won?t go any further. If I put the disc in the computer and try PowerDVD, it does the same thing. However I do have the folder with the ripped movie remaining on my HD and PowerDVD will play the movie from that source.
So the two questions
Why does Shrink not shrink some of the recent movies to 4.5 size? Should I be manually dividing the disc to two folders?
How do I get the ripped version of Bangkok Dangerous that is on my HD burned to a disc that will play?
Thanks,
Don
You have found a newer movie that shrink cannot handle.Soooooo
1) decrypt to HDD with dvdfab HD (free version) Or use paid for version
2) process files (all) with fixvts 3) shrink files with dvd shrink, output as iso/image to HDD
4) burn iso/image file with IMgburn
Just a thought here... Have had a couple of movies that I did end up having to burn to DVD-9 dics instead of DVD-5.. Shrink will compress but if the original file is very very large, compression is going to be extreme and quality will end up suffering..
Can't remember which movies it happened with, but Shrink said that it would have to compress down to less than "50%" of the original file size to fit on a DVD-5 disc.. Might work, and might even be watchable on a portable DVD player, but definitely not on a big-screen TV.
If compression level is ok and finished file is just a bit too big to fit on a DVD-5, you might want to try outputting to a file on your HDD instead of trying to directly burn.... Then run the new file thru DVD Shrink again to compress a bit more so it will fit on the DVD-5.
Or try using DVD-Rebuider instead of DVD Shrink (not familiar with this one, but there are many members here on the forums who swear by it and say it does a much better job than Shrink when it comes to extreme compression). There is also a forum just for DVD-Rebuilder that you might want to check out.

For high compression Dvd Rebuilder is the way to go hands down. I'm one of those members that swear by it. ;) The resulting quality is fantastic.

Sorry I was away for a day, thanks for the responses. I am not quite as obsessed with the technology as some of you here and I always know I will get good suggestions if I post.

Thanks for passing this on. I tend to like to keep things simple so have shied away from loading and learning tons of programs. I may give these a try however.
joleca,
I have tried to keep compression above 75% If I can't achieve that level, I usually just manually divide the movie into two parts and burn two discs. I guess I should have done this with Bangkok Dangerous. I'm not sure why I didn't.
I have seen other threads about DVD-Rebuilder but again I have not seen the need to this point so have chosen not to complicate my life with another learning curve. I might give it a try especially with the others saying how the like it.
7thsinger,
Do you use rebuilder exclusively for compression? If so, would you substitute rebuilder for shrink in step 3 in the sequence that bryston sent in the post above?

again thanks for all the suggestions.

Yes. I typically rip full disc to my hard drive. Then use VobBlanker. Then Dvd Rebuilder and burn with Imgburn.
