Problems with DVD Shrink Encoding Phase

I was wondering if anyone has ideas to resolve my problem. I'm backing up my Anime DVDs (Yu Yu Hakusho)I'm having problems during the encoding phase. It goes to about 23% and then Shrink stops and indicates it cannot read a sector. So I cleaned the DVD and the problem still occurred. Then, I tried DVD Decrypter and still had the same problem so I cleaned the DVD again. Then, I tried DVD X Platinum and it stopped analysing the DVD at 30%. I'm thinking it's the DVD because I've had success backing my other episodes
with no problems. Even though the DVD disc has scratches the other DVDs I backed also had scratches (nothing significant). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thx!

It still is possible that the scratches are the problem. Also let it be known that scratches on the back of the DVD can and do ruin the DVD also :-(

A "Home remedy" is using some toothpaste w/added Borax and a soft cotton cloth, wiping firmly from the center straight out to the side -
