Hi I've got some movies that i download a while back some are in avi which was perfect quality on the ps3 others were mp4 for my ipod and psp when i tried it on the ps3 it was horrible
SO I tried converting it to avi and i guess i got the codec wrong and the file wasn't recognizable on the ps3
Is there any program that makes the movie quality better on the ps3 or the correct codec so i could try again?
Thanks in Advance [=

I doubt it's going to look much better on the PS3. The mp4s that were created for your iPod and PSP likely had an incredibly small resolution (I forget what the standards are for screens that small). Anyway, since they have such a low resolution, they'll only look uglier and uglier as you display it on a bigger and bigger screen.
Imagine... imagine taking an old, old photograph and trying to blow it up to fit your entire wall. It'd look incredibly bad. The same deal here.

It's not about which format you're using. What resolution are your .mp4 files? What resolution are your .avi files?
(For instance, 720p HD videos have a resolution of 1280 x 720.)
If you don't know what your video resolution is, you can check it by opening it up in VLC Media Player or Media Player Classic and checking the stream info. Or you could try GSpot and AVICodec, too.
But what I'm guessing is that your .avi files just have a higher resolution than your .mp4 files do.

1.) I think it's supposed to be a taboo to tell us the name of the movie... I think... Oh, well. Anyway.
2.) Is this the .mp4? (I'm guessing it is.)
3.) What type of TV do you have? Or, rather, what is your PS3 outputting? 480i/p? 720p? 1080i/p?
4.) Either way, the thing that's happening is that the image that's being blown up to fill the screen is just too small in terms of pixels.
For instance, it's being blown up to four times its size to fit on a standard-def TV. If you've got a 1080p TV, you're blowing up the picture to... about 16x its normal size. When you do that, the PS3 (or your TV) has to fill in the space between each pixel, and it can only guess so much.
I dunno, I feel like I'm making it sound way more complicated than it is. Am I?

1.) Yeah, with a 720p HDTV, even if it's a small one, you'll definitely notice a difference. With a source video that small, you're definitely going to have a lot of pixelation.
2.) Unfortunately, unless you have a higher-quality copy of the movie (like the DVD, or if the DVD had it, the digital copy), you won't be able to do much about it.
3.) I believe those'll be fine. The only thing is that the USB slot has a certain wattage or so it can't exceed, but it should only be a problem if you decide to stick 4 George Foreman grills into each slot. You'll also have to pay a bit more attention your PS3's ventilation, as more power being consumed will mean more heat. It shouldn't be much of an issue, though.
...that said, don't take my word for it, especially regarding the SD card adapter. Try it for yourself if you've got one lying around. (Me, I splurged and got myself the 60GB for about $400, so I don't have to worry about USB slots. I know, I'm just being a dick now, but it IS a heck of a lot more useful. :P)

Sorry, no. Changing the codec will actually result in a LOSS of quality.
The codec is different from the format. The mp4, avi, h264 that you always see aren't actually the codecs - they're standards. Like... guidelines, to which the codecs are made.
For instance, the avi standard has a lot of codecs, with DivX and Xvid being the two most common ones. ".avi" are the guidelines, and "DivX" and "Xvid" are the actual tools that follow the guidelines.
Sort of.
The codecs take data and process it according to those guidelines and what you get is a video of a certain format (avi) using a certain codec (DivX/Xvid).
The same thing applies to h264 (the current HD standard). h264 is just a guideline, and codecs like x264 (and the other two commercial encoders) are what actually work with video data.
As for the resolution, you can definitely up the resolution, but again, all that would happen is that the video would be blown up to that resolution, with all the missing pixels being estimated by a program.
You can't make something out of nothing. If you have 400 pixels, you can't turn it into 1000 pixels unless you guess the extra 600, and that's all that resizing does - guess those extra pixels.
But if you want to get a 60GB PS3 for a fairly decent price, you can check out Ebay. Yeah, it's kind of after the fact, but that's where I got my refurbished 60GB, and for around $420, too, which was less than the retail price, and it still plays perfectly.
So anyway. I hope I helped out a bit.

well is there any way for me to be able to watch my movies on my ps3 with out downloading a new one since i have this site i used to use for psp games and they have a great libary of movies there
as for the 60gb ps3 ebay is way too overpriced for some things what i have found out donno if im allowed to post it here is
Buy a broken 60gb ps3 doesnt matter what the problem is laser died overheating problems etc those are usually 100-250 so i ve been looking for a few and there around 150-200
then you call up sony and ask for a out of warranty repair which would cost you $150 + shipping thats around $160
and the deal with them is if they fix it good u get a working ps3 if they dont the have to replace it with another system that has the same features so in other words $175 broken ps3 + $160 for sony repair = around $335 you can get a perd working 60gb ps3

No problem with posting a suggestion for getting a PS3.
1.) You can convert the .flv files to another format. I dunno what program can handle .flv files, but you can convert it to almost anything - mp4, m2ts, avi, mpg, wmv, etc., and it should be able to play fine.
Your .mp4 files SHOULD play without much of a problem. If they play on your PSP, they'll most likely play on your PS3 as well.
2.) If they're .flv files, did you grab them off of something like Youtube (or some other similar thing)? If so, you can view them in your PS3's internet browser. It's not the most efficient of tools, but it's still an option.
But if it was just a link that you downloaded, then I dunno how you would go about that. Maybe try a Google search for "flv to ps3" or something.
