I've checked several forums and here are the possibilities that I've investigated:
1) Bad HDMI cable.
--Nope, tested 4 separate, brand-new, certified HDMI 1.3 cables.
2) TV doesn't accept 1080p, just 1080i and then upconverts.
--Nope, I have a Samsung LN-T4065f which accepts up to 1080p.
I am still unable to set the output to 1080p. When I do, I get an ugly picture with a halo effect around bright areas and areas of motion.
1080i output is great, but I'd like to know why I can't get the full potential from the device.
So, I plugged the ps3 straight into my TV rather than first passing through the receiver. And there's the problem...
What gives?
My Yamaha RX-V1600 is several years old, but it's HDMI 1.1 compatible, so it should be able to output 1080p at 24 or 60. Right?
I did some searching and a lot of other people are having the same problem; the receiver just doesn't support 1080P passthrough.
If I may make a suggestion you could run the 7.1 sound using the hdmi from the ps3 to the receiver, and hook the ps3 to the tv using component cables to get 1080P. It would work until you get a chance to upgrade anyway and you would still have your 7.1 and 1080p.
Yes, I do have a 7.1 setup.
My ps3 doesn't have a component-out connection. Is this a feature of earlier versions, or is there some proprietary ps3-to-component cable that I'd need to buy?
If that's the case, then I'm fine with 1080i until I feel like upgrading my receiver.
Does your TV have an HDMI passthrough for the audio? If not then you would have to see if your TV supports 1080p over Component first (not all HDTV's do) and if so, that would be the cheapest way to go as the last option would be to upgrade your receiver. Good Luck.

Optical only goes upto 5.1, thats a 7.1 setup.
Yamaha can simulate 7.1 from any source, the difference is minimal anyway.
From not being able to play or watch a movie at 1080p i thing is better that way.
Component cable Vs HDMI sucks big time.
