PS3 upscale videos from harddrive?

Anyone know if the PS3 upscales video from a USB harddrive? Say i got a 720p MKV video and play it from USB harddrive to PS3, will it attempt to upscale it to 1080p? or just display 720p with black boxes around it with option to go full screen, in which case it just enlargens the display to fill the screen?

And would I have to convert that MKV video to a suitable format?

It should, if you've got the upscale feature set to Normal/Full Screen.

...at least that's what I think.

It also depends on what you've got your PS3 outputting at. (Y'know, when you configure the video settings and you can check the resolutions you want.)

I know it upscales my old .avi movies, so I think it should do the same to the videos in your USB drive.

Speaking of videos, your .mkv movie should be remuxed into something like .m2ts or .mp4 to play on the PS3.

You'll also realize that your mkv needs to be at or under 4GB to stream from a USB harddrive because:
1. The PS3 only reads from external FAT32 drives and....
2. FAT32 drives have a 4GB size limit per file

A program like mkv2vob will convert the mkv to a vob file and it gives the option of splitting it into FAT32 compatible chunks. I'm sure there are similar programs that will also split .m2ts and .mp4 files.

1. Yah that sucks because I formatted my new 16gb USB drive NTFS then only remember AFTER that PS3 can't read it. GRR.
2. Good luck on getting anything over 2GB into a Fat32 USB drive. My computer always gives me an error saying "Cannot find file" or something, about when it's done reading/writing up to the 2gb point. I have NO idea why - but on all of my USB drives (4/8/16gb's) I get the same error.

Also try tsMuxer. It will let you split large files. Fast too! Although it does'nt work with all mkv files - for many it cannot find the audio streams. Works great when it picks up all streams though.
